Hi all,

Can anybody help with this problem.

Occasionally on our systems they fail to populate some of the user account related macro values using Kixtart 3.63 (typically on Win2k/XP logging on to a Windows 2000 domain).

For example - FULLNAME, HOMEDIR, HOMEDRIVE & HOMESHR are all blank.

Querying the domain controllers directly shows that the account information is correct for the users but Kixtart is failing to retrieve it.

I can see all the other macros including the lserver.

Can anybody help?

Thanks.

Barry.

Please upgrade and see if that fixes your problem.

It's going to be non-trivial to upgrade because the scripts contain code that will break in later (v4) releases.

There seems to be some link to when a user is logging on with cached credentials...

Well that says a great deal. Logging in with cached credentials means that you are not talking with a domain controller. Hence no data in the macros that comes from the DC. Some data may be being gathered later but apparently the user data is not.

Please explain the why the user is logging in with cached credentials.

User is logging on with cached credentials because they are coming in to our network via a VPN connection.

They boot their PC, log on with cached credentials, bring up their internet connection and then VPN into our network. Finally they manually run the logon script.

Wierd thing is it sometimes runs properly, sometimes net. Can't figure out any logic to it.

Thanks.

What client OS?

My guess is that after connecting to the network via VPN, the computer, if NT/W2K/XP, has not yet established its secure channel with a DC of the domain to which it is a member. Without the secure channel the client can not contact the DC.

You may be able to check this out by re-running the logon script again after a period of time (60-120 seconds) if it fails. If it operates currently this time, then possibly the client has setup the required communication channel to support the gathering of macro data from the authentication domain.

Clients are a mix of 2k/xp.

Delaying execution of the logon script does not ssem to make a difference.

But executing "nltest /sc_reset:domainname" before executing the script seems to kick things back into shape.

Thanks for all your help Howard - I think I can code around this problem by resetting the secure channel if required...

Barry.
