I've seen other UBB sites that offer RSS feeds. Any reason why this BBS doesn't? Can they be enabled? |
I'd be ok with that change, but I'm sure it would require a board update. |
After a small amount of research, the RSS features are mods/additions to UBB. I tracked them down to here. |
I don't like rss feeds... guess that's a good reason |
i would love to see a RSS feed! |
Can anyone tell me why I need it?? I've never used it and don't miss it.. But you never know Please convince me!! |
well, one reason is you could run a RSS news feed on your local desktop, and see when new posts have been made. I personaly have a RSS collector on my website that i use to browse several interesting RSS feeds at a glance. http://isorg.com/?page_id=64 |
I use Attensa to aggregate RSS feeds from several forums/websites to Outlook. Yeah, more mail! It saves a bunch of time so I don't have to trawl them all several times daily. Anyone here guilty of that? You've got mail! You've got mail! You've got mail! |
DOH! Guess different strokes for different folks. Have you heard of mailbox limits? Yeah I suppose I could feed them off to a PST but I'm just as bad as users at cleaning up / deleting old mail. Using RSS alone or trawling doesn't leave anything but cache on my computer and a quick click of an icon and that's all gone too. RSS maybe, into my mail - no thanks. But hey - if it works for you that's cool too. In general though I don't visit as many tech forums as maybe some of you do so I like to trawl Korg myself. I've used a few RSS readers and soon find out I have TOO much to read and so I don't read a lot of it because the RSS takes time to read too. Good idea overall but Information Overload kicks in. |
I save to a PST and Attensa cleans up at defined intervals. The default is to delete read posts after 3 days and unread at 15 days so everything is tidy. The problem I face is that I miss a lot from korg and other forums b/c I only frequently check two or three of the sub forums. One place to quickly scan the subjects of all forums is ultra convenient and beneficial for me. |
forum subscription emails feels lot better to me than rss feeds. but, that is a feature henri has not yet enabled. |
Quote: but those only come out once a day, or unless you signup to watch a single thread. |
IMHO, either option would be welcome. |
I´m not really convinced yet. But I think I´ll give it a try. Thanks guys.I now understand Jim´s Idea better. Think it´s a good one... |
give what a try? |
I think he meant he might give an RSS reader a try and see how it works for him in general. 07/21/2005 Review of RSS Readers http://realgeek.blogspirit.com/archive/2005/07/21/review-of-rss-readers.html List of news aggregators http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_news_aggregators |

Thanks Doc, That's what I meant... |
I gave this a try: KiXtart.org - New Posts http://www.kixtart.org/4_rss20.xml |
Well done, Nice job.. Now I'm convinced |

testing |

testing another |

Kewl.. Maxthon can now tell me if there is new posts. Sweet.. Oh, it is still being tested. Kent |
Your link is broken Kent Maxthon Internet Browser software is a powerful tabbed browser with a highly customizable interface |
the RSS works. kinda. I did a fix for the issue above but just noticed that I don't have rights to overwite one file... |
hmm... found a file where I was able to give a new name for the script... huh. gladly I don't document my changes |
huh. took longer than expected. think I should sleep once in a while... anyway, after some fighting, got my fix running: http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/ContentIslands/5_rss20.xml |
hmm, hah, well ... all I get on this link seems to be the xml source shown in Maxthon... tested Opera, and yes, it asked me if would like to subscribe to the feed, but at the same time I got this : Quote: |
lol. yes, there is no point opening rss feed in a browser. it's just xml to it. the only reason why one should even consider rss reader for kixtart is that nobody is coding bbChecker for the threads |
my fault ... was able to manually add the url to my RSS feeds list. now waiting for my post to be added to the list |
that's the actual problem of the rss feeds. they have delays. |
Ah well, Maxthon is quite comfortable regarding this. One can set the autorefresh interval for each feed individually |
sure. but you have delay, no matter what you set there. normal client has minimum poll interval of 10min and kixtart.org has a minimum update delay of 5min |
Works for me... |
See what you went and did now Jooel. Now I'm gonna get buried in reading stuff again. Oh well, actually sort of nice - can review a ton of new posts on one page better looking than UBB |
Sweet. Just dl-ed rss bandit and added some feeds. First time at rss and liking it already. |
Be careful.... RSS has a habit of sucking up your time |
Jooel, this rocks!!! Thanks for hooking me up! |
wonder. should I add per forum feeds or should I enhance the current one to say the forum? think per forum is better for users so they can choose on which forums to be looking at... |
I like the per forum option. You could do both though. |
cool... google has a RSS reader web page http://www.google.com/reader/ |
I am getting the following error on - http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/ContentIslands/4_rss20.xml "Not a valid or supported feed" That is with Maxthon.. Kent |
Rad.. That is interesting.. The Google reader is parsing out the date as May 1, 2006. Talk about a time warp! Kent |
kent, maxthon is bit crappy. sure it supports 2.0? |
Quote: It maybe.. But we'll see what they have to say - http://forum.maxthon.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31869 Thanks, Kent |
oh kent, you are trying to use the 4 version. take the fiver. the 4 is with the ubbThreads feeder which is buggy. five is done with my fixed version of the builder. oh, and the dude answering your support ticket on the other board is pretty lame. |
However, the next response is pretty good though and Tara is pretty knowledgeable: http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=h...s%2F4_rss20.xml http://rss.scripting.com/?url=http%3A%2F...s%2F4_rss20.xml Kent |
ja, I actually knew that. my rss reader links directly to the feedvalidator when there is a problem. anyway, like said, the issue was solved ages ago. and, it's good to know that although there are basta's on each board, there also are ppl who can provide valuable feedback as well. |
Lonkman, it'd be nice if the link added to the feed would point to the actual post not to the topic itself ... is this possible? Not too funny if the post is as big as this |
hmmm... well, iirc, it actually links to the post. it just doesn't scroll to it. yeah, it's doable. keep the suggestions coming. soon will drop this and end up updating the bbChecker |
k, fixed: 1) the link does point to the post, with a scroll 2) time format to comply with RFC 2822 which is accepted as RSS timestamp (rss wants RFC 822 with 4 digit year, which in turn is RFC 2822 date format) |
btw, maxthon RSS does not remember the read feeds, thus, if you don't remember which feed you already read, you will be reading lots of them all over again. |
yeah Maxthon's main feature ain't RSS... it's just a very simple reader. If you want more advanced stuff, go for a RSS reader. |
nah, disabled my rss Reader as well. it's simple but buggy. |
How about adding this RSS feed info to the FAQ's when it's done and no longer in test state? |
Normally one would add it to main forum page so that the rss enabled browsers notify the users about it .. |
actually, I added the rss feed to the mainpage. the thing is, I needed to crack some board code to be able to do that. but to add the simple line for the rss viewers to see the feed, I would need to edit lot more of the code. or add the feed to all threads that's just how ubbthreads code is organized. |
after a huge fight (some dudes online noticed the lagging), was able to add the forum name to the rss feed. |
