Hmmm... WHY LOL...

Just curious how you want to use it... most of the newer scripts use WMI for gathering just about anything you want.

Oh well a quick STFW got me the file on the 2nd hit.

Neither is KiXtart unless you have a VERY old version and it also would be difficult to be networked and return this information to a Central location in DOS

well.. actually im running kixtart 2.33 for dos without any big problems (but with quite a few limitations [Frown] ).. This presents some installation menus (selecting NIC, OS, Appliactions and more) for the admin. All in all it makes (re-)installations of an new/old computer rather easy and almost 100% automatic. The easy part is to automate is windows. Its not to hard in dos either, but it takes a litte more to do it...

With smbios(2) i get some more infomartion to present to the user automatic...

actually, the windows part is the hardest.
not that it is hard to put together but to create an environment for it that makes it cry no more...

Okay... old ones maybe. Problem we have now days is that the GHOST image fully compressed is beyond the size of the CD. Haven't messed with doing multiple CDs so we just boot from disk and then Ghost from Server.

It is possible if you spend the time to get many, many systems auto installation supported with different hardware and all, but if you mean older Win9x or NT stuff, then probably TOO much trouble to invest the time in another method.

If your new/updated images are 2000/XP then you should be able to use any one of the current imaging products to support multiple hardware level installations from one image.

Oh, well. Best of luck, hope the SMBIOS2 is helpful.

What about Rad's UDF -

WMIQuery() - Used to execute a query against WMI

Which was sparked from mine?
TotalMem( $Systemname ) - Determine amount of memory installed using WMI

The WMIQuery() effectively replaces SMBIOS.

Thanks,

Kent

Jooel,

You are right. How hard is it to update to 4.x? You would probably have to convince Management though.

Last I remember about SMBIOS, it was developed by IBM.

Kent,
Slow down a bit and re-read the thread. XM is using KiX 2.33 because...

Les,

I realized that. [Embarrassed] I even offered another place to look (IBM). However, when doing a search on their site yielded not much.

You know.. WMI may not be out of the question here.. However it would take some coding to do..

In KiXtart 2.33, you could do a
RUN "CSCRIPT WMISCRIPT.VBS"

Write the results needed to a text file and read in the data needed.

There is not better way to reload computers than the dos/network mode. Throw on a multicast boot disk and you can burn down 100 machines at once in less that 10 minutes.
I am still using dos 2.33 with its limitations and I use smbios to extract the information that WMI does. Then I copy the data to the network to be installed into the database telling me that computer has been reloaded.
kix32.exe can be expanded into the realm of DOS by using a dos extender that would allow it to run in protected mode. Then it would be able to run a 32 bit program that has access to all the hardware.

Actually, a better cmd-line smbios utility is pcpbios from PC Pitstop. It outputs to a text file that is *almost* an ini file and can easily be converted to one. In my testing, I thought it worked better than IBM's tool.

Dear,

pcpbios returns also a great amount of information.
Good alternative.
Chris, thanks for your input.
