Finally, after being about 24 hours late:
Recap of the second round of KiXGolf: CD Sorter
When the KiXGolf tournament entered the public coding phase we had Howard in the lead with 207 strokes.
Here's how the tournament continued:
Howard posted his 207-stroke entry and provided an alternative approach using the Scripting.Dictionary object with a score of
240
Richards code with a score of 279 was posted, too.
Then, Jooel started off with a 244-stroke code.
Jooel then proceeded to shave off one stroke from Howards code, thus giving him a KiXGolf score of 206.
Patrick Rutten joins the fray with a 427-stroke script.
Somehow, Jooel removed another 5 strokes from Richards original code, putting Jooel in lead with 201 strokes. Ahem, make that
200.
However, Howard quickly counters with an offer of 195 and then 192.
Jooel then gets his braincells smoking and finally counters with an 184 and quickly shaves off another one for a score of
183.
Jack Lothian enters with a slightly different algorithm and a score of 253.
Howard makes elegant use of variable scoping and is thus able to cut another stroke for a score of 182.
Maciep posts his own 230-stroke solution.
However, before long, Jooel finds another lonely stroke to cut and he's now down to 181 for Howard's base code.
Howard and Jooel are then discussing rounding problems and other functions that will handle situations outside the provided
test suite.
Meanwhile, in another corner of the KiXGolf Universe, Maciep improved his own solution down to 223 strokes.
Some time later, Maciep also reached the highly contested 180s with a 183 score.
In a surprise event, Maciep surpasses both Howard and Jooel by reducing his code to 171 strokes.
Based on an idea by Shawn, Maciep then reduces his code by another 2 strkes for a new low score of 169.
However, Howard now hijacks Maciep's code and reduces it to 163, then to 161.
Jooel, reawakened by the fierce competition, finds another useless character and ends up with a score of 160.
Somehow, Jooel managed to end up with the lowest score, KiXGolf Score 160 for the challange. However, both Howard and Maciep
also did an outstanding job. Howard provided an initial solution that eventually was reduced to 182. Maciep entered late but provided the groundwork for the winning 160-stroke solution.
The second round of this KiXGolf tournament was truely a collaborative effort, kudos to all participants. [ 25. March 2003, 22:53: Message edited by: sealeopard ]

Jens, Excellent recap. I enjoyed reading the previous post as much as participating in the coding event.
