I have an idea (brain fart actually). If within the first post of a UDF topic there was a link to a discussion thread, everyone could be asked to participate in the linked thread. Problem is, how would you get people to start a discussion thread AND place a link to it within their UDF post?

How would you keep people from ignoring the link and posting a reply in the UDF forum? I wonder if it is possible within UBB for the originator of the topic to close it? That would prevent replies, forcing them to either use the link or create their own thread.

I feel it is important to have discussions linked to the UDF otherwise a lot of good information could be missed.

Question: If a UDF post is closed, can a Moderator or the poster of the UDF still modify/update the post?

This way, we can force the discussion to happen on one of the other boards, preferable 'Scripts' but the original poster can still update the UDF or correct bugs and spelling errors.

Just gave it a try. Couldn't edit my own post, error message was that only Administrators or Moderators can perform this action.

Dear,

Again a nice discussion. Always someone is breaking the guideline rules.
We agree that special rules for the UDF forum were defined. Possible discus-
sions like "UDF doesn't work" and "how should I call it" should be done
on another forum. Simply an URL link is enough.

Also in the past members doesn't like a fixed format like scriptlogic for
entering an UDF.
The benefits of Scriptlogic UDF library are
- it has been a fixed format.
- you can see which UDF is popular.
- some UDFs on this site has been implemented as an internal function.
The disadvantages of Scriptlogic UDF library are
- no real discussion is possible.
Some members has problems with Scriptlogic UDF library, because it is a
part of a commercial site. bstyles (= member of Scriptlogic) descri-
bes it as something for the kixtart community without any commercial inten-
tion.

Another idea is not to show always signature. In some situations a signature
doesn't add additional information to reaction.
- in an earlier reply you show already your signature.
- some discussions on general forum has not really to do something with kix, but
mostly "how can we finish this slow weekend".

Don't misunderstand me: we love to read all kix and none-kix related posts
on this board.

greetings.

add to that list of disadvantages that the scriptlogics lib disallows some types of udf's.

example the ones without parameters.

I'd rather consider this a bug in the submission system. I do not think that ScriptLogic is intetionally blocking the posting of UDFs that do not require parameters.

Joeel, did you contact Brian/Scriptlogic directly about this?

I did as a matter of fact.
and the correction should be on its way...
anyway, the point was not to say that their lib is a problem but more like that strickt rules are the problem.

those have benefits and drawbacks.

As Jooel points out, ScriptLogic are aware of the inability to post zero parameter UDF's.

The post discussed in the following URL describes ScriptLogic's intention to fix it. Admittedly, it was some time ago.

http://www.scriptlogic.com/Support/Forums/display_message.asp?mid=4073

For what it's worth, I think ScriptLogic's UDF Library is absolutely superb.

As some of you have already said, the ability to easily view the most popular UDF's is brilliant. ...Personally, I really like the idea that their UDF's explicitly ask you for certain criteria. In addition to keeping the UDF Library neat and tidy, it also enforces 'submitters' to think about the UDF's they are adding.

The only things that I find disappointing on SL's UDF Lib are things that are fixable and on their to-do list. (ie. zero parameter functions and the inability to remove added parameters...etc...) ...but once that is fixed they will have an unbeatable UDF Library.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to put this site down in "any" way. I find other aspects of this site better than ScriptLogic's, most noticably the response time for this BB is mind blowing - better than any other BB I know. In addition, the vast number of UDF functions contained within this site's library is certainly impressive.

...just my £0.02.

Lee

yeah, the best thing to show that our "udf-lib" beats theirs in popularity is the amount of UDFs in it.
almost 300 in here for almost a year now...
