Hi

How can I read a remote registry like

$COMAPP = ReadValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders","Common AppData")

does it for the local one.

Thanks

raser

raser,

Try tacking the hostname onto the front of the key, like this ...

$COMAPP = ReadValue("\\HOSTNAME\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders","Common AppData")

Then check the value of @ERROR. It it still doesn't work, try mapping an admin share first. If it still doesn't work, try mapping a drive to the machine, like C$ (this is actually what I have to end up doing when reading remote registries of workstations in non-trusting domains).

For some strange reason - mapping an admin share just doesn't cut it (just for reading the registry mind you)

Plus - reading the registry of remote Win9x boxes doesn't work so well. Either it just doesn't work at all, or you need something running on the remote machine ... can anyone fill in the blanks here ?

luck,

-Shawn

Hello raser,

My suggestion on your post: http://kixtart.org/board/Forum1/HTML/002522.html

was meant to be used locally during login.
i.e. As part of the normal login process
each user would locally process this read and then your code would take action
based upon what it finds. You might want to periodically check how often the
user gets the GRC.DAT file, or if you only have one Parent server I guess it
is not that bad. We copy from about 20 different servers based upon their
IP address. However, dialups and other multiple nic cards do cause problems
with trying to update the GRC.DAT file. You may need to be a little more creative
with the code depending upon how you want the Parent Severs set and clients
controlled.

Remote Registry reads are prone to various problems. Unless there is some other reason not to
have your users run the login script each time and do this read,
I would recommend doing something locally and not doing it remotely.
