Ok, I searched and found IdentifyRemoteUser(), but I know the username and want the computer name they are logged into. Is there some UDF for that?

Basically what I would love to do is when I get a support call, I execute my kix script that prompts for the username then it gets the computer name they are logged into and then starts my VNC script to connect to that computer. That way I don't have to manually use WINS to find the PC they are logged into.

Maybe this should be on the COM forum?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Rocco

This has been discussed several times but to my knowledge nobody has written a UDF. The problem with a WINS lookup is when a user logs on to more than one computer.

So should that be then a list of Computers the user in question is currently / concurrently logged on ?

Maybe a KixForms script that prompts for a User and then Lists Computers the user is on to select and connect to ???

Maybe also you want these controls coded for yer [Wink] ?

Ask and you shall receive

Yes a list would be fine. Although we don't have many users that would be logged into more than one PC at a time.

It is hard to believe that no one had done this by now as useful as it seems it would be.

I always know what the user is that be haveing problems, getting their computername is a pain. Well ok WINS aint that hard, but it seems it could be easier!

LAN
NT Domain
WIN2K, WINNT, very few WIN9X(soon to be none)
15 WINS servers(?)(4 if 15 is too many) [Frown]
'What replication model ?' We don't have replication turned on.

Is this enough info?

Jochen,

looking forward too your script...

Rocco,

our approach:
1. Use bginfo to put WS name as a background image or if user wants help, let them start a kix with @wksta
2. Let the user read the workstation name out loud
3. Enter wksta and not username

Much simpler to implement and no network load. [Wink]

You say its a LAN Environment, that'd make me expect a middle sized Network with not more than 1000 Clients ? NT Servers and 15 WINS Servers could be indicators of a bigger Network ...

Hmmm ... and you have the vpn connection part already ?

What is this then; please post or e-mail that part that I am able to throw it inside the Form [Wink]

Should be codeable using WMI and/or ADSI ...

Ok, sorry, it's a WAN. Two main sites, 13 remotelocations. But only about 1500 Workstations.

14 BDC's(one at each remote location) 1 PDC (NT4DOMAIN). Yes we use Cisco VPN, mostly for IT peeps, and one small group of 8 sales reps.

Patrick,

If I mess with anyone's walpaper it could cost me my job, considering that the [U]pper [M]anagment is a little to user freindly and leans way too far to promise them what they ask for, and yet not give us (IT) what we need to give it to them.

UM is always yelling "We need security", but the last ones to support policies! "Well if I cannot change my wallpaper that just won't do!"

Ok, I'll stop before I get carried away!

I have made routines that parse a specific subnet, ping the computers with active leases, connect to each on-line PC and retreieve the loggedon user name.

problem... big subnets take time. multiple subnets magnify the problem.

Pat,

Still If I put a file on someone's desktop = more whining. Plus users will be sure to delete it if they don't know what it is (especially if it's named "IT Use - DO NOT DELETE") [Frown]

I have changed the My computer name to "MY Computer @WKSTA" but some of the old naming standards have too long of names, and you get the "My Computer MAN00023..." and the last few digits are important. Never mind that the user is too dull to know that the "..." means there is more to the name, and the responses you get trying to explain that to them.
code:
SetConsole ("Hide")
BREAK ON CLS
;==============================================================================
;Checking for OS. [ 1 ] = Windows NT [ 2 ] = Windows 9x
;==============================================================================
$KEY ='HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}'
SELECT
;--[ Windows XP/2000 ]---------------------------------------------------------
CASE((@INWIN = 1)AND((@DOS = "5.1")OR(@DOS = "5.0")))
$RC = WriteValue($KEY,"LocalizedString","My Computer %%COMPUTERNAME%%","REG_EXPAND_SZ")
; ? @SERROR
;
;--[ Windows NT ]--------------------------------------------------------------
CASE(@INWIN = 1)
$RC = WriteValue($KEY,"","My Computer %%COMPUTERNAME%%","REG_EXPAND_SZ")
; ? @SERROR
;
;------------------------------------------------------------------------------
;--[ Windows ME/98/95 ]--------------------------------------------------------
CASE(@INWIN <> 1)
$RC = WriteValue($KEY,"","My Computer @WKSTA", "REG_SZ")
; ? @SERROR
;
;--[ Unknown OS ]--------------------------------------------------------------
CASE 1
$OS = "Unknown OS"
ENDSELECT
;==============================================================================

Rad,

I have username, need PC name

right.. once it finds the PCs, it looks for who it logged on, then it compares the names...

But by the time it is finished, the user has probably logged off and gone home.

Rocco,

during login add a shortcut in the startmenu with the .kix

Works for me...

You could also change the label of the C drive to @wksta during login...(there's a UDF). Then the user should only start explorer.
The "My computer" could also be changed...

however, the simplest thing is part of the inventory...

You could also scan the BDCs event log, for logons.
