Unfortunately, the introduction of the mouse into the work environment did not suddenly make 'RSI' an illness. Also, there was RSI before anybody knew that it was RSI.
The design of the entire computer workplace does affect the symptoms commonly known as RSI. Additionally, the increase in time of keyboard/mouse usage also has an effect on those symptoms as well as the individual keyboard/mouse design and the way a user utilizes these devices. Even devices designed to be 'ergonomic' can introduce/amplify RSI symptoms when used improperly.
Our research center has done some studies on RSI and computer mouse/keyboard usage (partially as an expert witness in a Microsoft litigation case) with regards to design/ergonomics.
