My wife's school board enquired about improving upload speeds & they were told that for fast uplink you had to go the ISDN or fractional T1 route. DSL & Cable can out perform ISDN on download but not upload.

God Les, what do all those acronyms mean?

Thanks Les, but the longer explanations are as helpful as the acronyms. I am afraid, other than a few buzz words this an area where I am lost. [Confused]

Sorry,
Thought it was the TLAs and MLAs you wanted expanded. DSL can be either Symmetrical or not. Asymmetric means slow in one direction. DSL runs on LDDS circuits. It's just a fancy pants term that describes a pair of wires that have specific characteristics, one of which is length. Hence the L in LDDS.

Thanks Les,

I am a bit temped to ask you a whole bunch of questions because I kind of wonder if your knowledge can help me get something better at home but I think this type of topic might be out of my area of expertise. I think I will remain ignorant & happy with ADSL. [Smile]

The main problem with DSL is that it is distance dependent and must be all analog from the telecom central office to the customer premise. However, certain DSL setups can achieve 1.5 Mbit per second upload and download.

Cable is shared between multiple customers within a certian area whereas DSL is single-user to the CO. So, when a lot of people are surfing cable will most likely slow down more than DSL.

We were talking about this (sympatico) thingy at the office today. One of the guys pointed out that this "cap" may be a marketing ploy. Shortly after they capped us - they conviently came out with a super-high-speed DSL connection at twice the price, with a much higher cap ...

you stupid canadians!
your government should do as swedish, pay half of every dls line drawn.

on the other hand, in here, government has drawn over half of the ethernet lines. even the one I'm currently using.

Jens,

In theory that SLOW down may be true, but I've used mnay cable modems in high population density areas, and I don't notice it. For the most part here on the WEST Coast most areas I've used cable modem, has been the same speed any time, day or night. There are many methods of controlling that.. More hype then reality (imho)

I monitor network activity and can say that my upload rate is much lower than my download rate. Both rates are fairly stable.

Jens,
You're right that distance is a critical factor in the actual speed of throughput. I don't agree with your numbers though. I use high speed symmetrical DSL modems to extend my LAN off premise. I have achieved sustained throughtput between 1 and 6 mbps in the field depending on distance and line quality. The specs on the modems claim 10 mbps but even in the test lab we could not exceed 7.

Jooel,
You should see my office...
Half of it is setup as a test lab. Forget my desk, I hardly ever sit in front of it. I only use my desk to intimidate sales reps.

I spend all my time at one of those tall server consoles. You know... 3 shelves with 3 kbd pullouts, 2 computers, 1 server, 2 laptops, 2 monitors, all tied together with a KVM. Behind that is my workbench where I get to take things apart. Sometimes I put them back together.

Les:

thanks for the heads up on the speed. I was going by memory based on an offer I got from a DSL provider for a potential home connection. Their best offer was 1.5MBit up/down.

Last time I checked the cost was in '99.

Roughly (monthly):
T1 local loop: $552
64K circuit (Interactive path): $339
256K circuit (Query path): $1214 (may go to $1850 if we upgrade to 512K)
Channelizing feature: $90
DS-1 link to Bell: $60

So the total for 512 + 64 is $2891. per month after the smoke clears.

The LDDS circuits for DSL cost me around $20./month.

The DSL modems I use are StormPort 610 from Elastic ( www.paradyne.com ).

I guess I should clarify that those are WAN costs not internet.

All this stuff is greek to me.

According to Bell Canada my ADSL line can give 1000 (Down) /160 (Up) but in speed tests I have never got higher than about 600 / 135. Several people seem to have posted incredible speeds of 3000/1500 with sympatico but maybe they have this new super high speed mentioned by Shawn. That costs $55 Canadian a month.

Currently my service costs $30 Canadian (or $20 US) per month but Bell just announced a rate increase to $35.
