Shawn... do you work for this company?

quote:
Canadian broadband provider Sympatico, owned by Bell Canada, sparked concern among some of its customers by introducing a 5Gb "bit cap" before making any metering tool available for users to check the amount of data they had downloaded.
Price caps take off in US

FWIW...
Sympatico.ca announced download caps in july/august - why? - they claimed 175 out of 700,000 users were regularly abusing download amounts and causing havoc on their network...
For many of us in Canada, sympatico is the weapon of choice for home use, as they probably have the widest coverage in a very wide country...
I'm almost positive that Shawn does not work for them - it's more likely his home service provider...

hehee, I work indirectly for Bell Canada - I used to be a Bell Canada employee until they outsourced us to a Bell Canada subsidiary. Sympatico is owned by Bell Canada. My email address is stassie@sympatico.ca so Im a sympatico customer.

Yeah - this is old news and I was mighty pissed about it. I signed a contract for unlimited access than they go and decide to change the contract with impunity. Guess I could go somewhere else (cable) but I get an employee discount.

The statement about the metering tools is an absolute lie ! They had been monitoring customer usage for month prior, and made a summary of accoutn usage available on day one - still do to this day.

Why are we talking about this anyways ? [Wink]

-Shawn

[ps] Did I say I was mighty pissed about them changing the rules ? The comment about a small portion of the users abusing the bandwidth and spoiling everything for everyone else is SOooo true.

To her credit, Ma Bell provides high-speed access to everyone in Canada...(if you have a telephone and a satellite dish and a pc and about $80 bucks a month that you want to flush)... [Cool]
You'd think in the land that invented the darn thing (about 30 minutes down the pike from here) that all phone thingies would be more reasonably priced... [Frown]
Hey, we're only talking about this 'cuz codtn asked, and every possible KiX question has already been addressed, and we don't have lives, and we don't have anything better to do, and the honey-do is honey-done, and yada yada yada... [Roll Eyes]

Now you're mixing technology... satellites and DSL?

Not quite DSL...
Regular dial-up connex to your sympatico isp for slow up-loads and piggy-back on your Express-vu satellite tv package for fast down-loads...

I may live in the bush but that doesn't mean I just crawled out from it. I do know how the satellite stuff works, but this thread started out talking about DSL, me thinks. A whole different technology. I don't think Shawn is beaming to us via satellite.

Ah! I'm just pissed off that Australia and Canada have started down this trail of caping my limits and now the US money greedy (^*%&%^%)^ are going to want to do the same stupid thing.

Shawn is beaming to us from GEEKLAND or is the KIXFORMSLAND a subsidary of Pa Tassie Inc.

...not likely 'cuz he lives and works at the centre of the universe (go leafs go) and has high-speed dsl availability...
...the point being, if one happens to live in the bush or an igloo, like you and me, for example, one of our options is snail uploads and cheetah downloads...
...strange isn't it...the Yanks are usually the leaders in everything capitali$tic...

Yeah... and elephantine prices! Not certain of the prices by hear that in ThBay you can get DSl for about $20. and cable for about $40. I think there are some bundle reqs though, like you need more than basic cable to get high speed for $40.

I'd have to trade my StarChoice dish for a VU and then dig deep to get quasi high speed. Guess I'll stick with my 26.4 dial-up.

26.4K Dang! I'd at least want 56K

But, then again if cable caps and Satellite don't I'd probably think about dropping cable and go with Satellite

yep we are the LEADER in snake oil and bleeding your wallet dry I think.

I'll be pissed if Comcast/ATT raise my rates or limit my download bandwidth or total bytes. They already throttle my upload bandwidth.

But what can I do? Four PCs 100MB to the cable-modem. Nothing less is acceptable anymore.

At home (where I am now) I run sympatico DSL. In the house I have a LAN with 4 users & the limit doesn't seem to affect us. My cost is $35 a month Canadian. My LAN & Internet is up 24/7 & to my knowledge sympatico is almost never down. Plus, I get 10 hours free a month to use with a dial-up modem. I let my daughter in Guelph use this & she essentially gets free access. All in all, I think sympatico is a good deal.

My brother just outside Toronto is stuck with cable since he is just outside the 5 mile limit from a Bell switching station & he can not get Sympatico highspeed. Every time I talk to him his service is down. For some strange reason the cable company gives out fixed IP addresses & some jerk on his local node keeps stealing his IP address & he losses access. The cable company doesn't seem to care. He also pays exactly the same monthly rate that I do.

Our local school used the satellite for a while & on average it seemed to give the same performance as Sympatico high speed or cable.

Howard,

Are you sure they purposely throttle your upload? As far as I know both cable & DSL have technical reasons that seriously affect upload speeds. My upload speed is about 1/4 or 1/3 of download speed.

I have never explored the technical side of the network via cable. I see the same different between up and down. When they told me that the upload was slower, I probably improperly assume they had control.

Uploads are slower on ADSL but not SDSL. I use SDSL modems back-to-back on my LAN as private DSL to extend my LAN beyond where I have fibre and CAT5. Unfortunately I cannot extend it to my house as Bell cannot provide an LDDS circuit.
