Didn't you forget to mention that is has to work under DOS? [Wink]

What is the reason that WMI is not an option? What are the OS that need to be supported?

Any alternative will reqire a executable to be run on the local disk. This will imply to read a piped-out text file and parse it. Then you're back ar square one, namely using WINMSD.

What are the exact requirements/justifications to go this particular way?

The OS' are Windows NT Server 4.0 and the reason WMI is not an Option is a company policy ... just can't install anything I need [Roll Eyes]

What I actually do is executing a winmsd /s /f via rcmd on the servers and then readline it...

Maybe I was correct in first assuming that there is no other way than WMI [Razz]

The NT4 version of WinMSD can be locally executed against a remote server without RCMD. Odd that they took out that option in 2K.

Wonder what API they use and if FSO might work...

FSO ?
That'd need WSH installed, right ?
Another policy conflict [Roll Eyes]

ehmm .. and executing the winmsd locally against the remote will be darn slow due to ISDN WAN connection

No, FSO (FileSystemObject) is not WMI.

I wasn't proposing that you run NT4 WInMSD local, only stating that since it can be run local that it must use native APIs to do it. Remember, it pre-dates WMI.

rereading the post... I coulda swore you said WMI... [Confused]
WHS yes.

No, said WSH [Big Grin]

Anyway, will stick with rcmd, winmsd until we upgrade to either 2K or .NOT [Wink]
