I am all for fast. I find ADSI to be 6-7 times slower than it Perl counterpart. Can I infer from your comments that Idispatch & IADs interfaces with all their properties and the like is why ADSI is so slow?

emmm ... COM Automation isn't the fastest thing going ... relatively speaking ... alot depends ... given that COM and ADSI as a constant - id have to concede that maybe Kixtart isn't the fastest thing going (which I know is true because VBS beats the pants off Kixtart anyday (sadly)).

Oh - you mean the Perl lanman calls ... those are bound to be fast because they are just wrappers arounf the lanman api - ADSI has a whole whack of object model to support.

Shawn, I am referring to using Perl Win32::OLE to access ADSI methods/properties versus Win32::Lanaman or Win32::NetAdmin.

I find that when I use KiXtart I am always happy. (how many I's can I put in a sentence [Embarrassed] ). Anyway the heavy duty stuff other than logon scripts is accomplished via Perl. (Sorry to say on this forum)

Just like that GrpMaint.exe (Perl) that is still being completed. It is fast and can be built into a command line utility. If any feedback would be retrieved, it wouldn't have to be developed in a vacuum. But I digress...

Yeah - me too - well just keep thinking "collections" ... maybe George Bush Sr. would say it like this: "methods and properties ... bad ... collections ... good!"

Eh Shawn, if you're looking to extend KiXForms with LanMan stuff, how about WinSock stuff too?

Kinda like this SocketWrench stuff talked about here.

Topic: Cannot handle COM events?

Wouldn't that be cool or are we drifting a little too far off in scope?

Les,

Well to be more specific ... I was looking to extend Kixforms with any features that may be severely lacking in Kixtart ... for example, while the File I/O in Kixtart isn't the greatest - its certainly sufficient and (imho) no need to add anything there - same goes for INI and REG stuff ... but a wrapper object for all the lanman stuff would be kinda cool ... maybe rundundant with ADSI though ...

These other objects could be packaged inside the Forms DLL ... but would be seperate distinct objects ... whether they really belong there or not is open for debate. Might be a good opportunity for board members with C programming skills to contribute to the Forms library ... I wouldn't mind packaging stuff-up and objectifying things ... then this Forms library would turn into more like a ToolKit ... like the TCL/TK ToolKit ...

Benefit is - if your going to copy/distribute and register a DLL ... might as well get the biggest bang for the buck.

checking on the msdn Library (from Vstudio 6) and trying to understand some bits about this and no-go...

quess I have to get on the web searching for better documentation to m$ stuff...
normal, m$ docs are so bad for their own stuff that no-one can understand...

Am I missing a point here !

When you choose to use KiXtart as the login processor it dosn't lack anything in speed, but,
if you choose to also use it for other programming issues, it might not be the fastest, but it is stil reliable.

I have two objectives when using KiXtart:
  • Make the logon script as short as possible - in time
  • Use KiXtart to process logonscript information - compile the info (Ofline)
If KiX is slow for some (non login) operations, why use it for this ?
  • Ease of writing/reading (understanding), no $i++ ^$i Set or other mysterious operations [Wink]
  • Easy converting from ofline to online scripts
To summarize the two lists, i wouldn't dream om using COM on Excel/Access to gather information via the lonon script.
This might raise a discussion (It was meant to)

-Erik

ps.
Shawn,
I will try to cleanup my Excel-UDF for unused functions and publish it in the UDF-forum

I don't know how, but I got my server messed up...
I think I'll give RH 7.3 a try...

I'd like though to have my vpn server as w2k but as far as I know, it's not possible...

so, don't wonder if you don't see me for couple of hours [Wink]

What is it that it's not possible? Having a VPN server in W2K? Where did you get that from?

from my head...

there is some things needed:
nat
firewall (over the nat)
vpn client support (in the nat)

I know there is some sort of nat in the w2k server but as havent tried it, don't know how good.

all I know that after I installed some post sp3 hotfixes, I have not been able to connect in my net with my linux server... and I'm not sure what is causing that.

and I just enchanged the kixweeper to the next level. can't post it now... [Frown]

{edit}
could actually make a competition on that...
got 29s (144 blocks / 15 mines)

If you're into VPN, have a look at these MSFT docs: HOW TO: Configure the NAT Service in Windows 2000, Virtual Private Networks in Windows 2000.

These should get you started... [Big Grin]
