Paging NT DOC...
Ask the DOC, he always seems to have the jump on NAV stuff.  According to their website, they have NAV CE 8.0.  I havn't received my update however.

I know what you mean by a .0 update. Symantec never got it right until 7.61 and even then I think it was around build 35 or so.

Forget NTDOC... I called Symantec and they promised to put NAV CE 8.0 in the mail.

Yeah yeah... I know... don't try to sell me swamp land in Florida. [Big Grin]

They keep changing my password on their website, so I quit checking in on them.

Our staff is down to 2 from 7 now as well, so not as much time for everthing I'd like to do.

They've actually changed the name from Norton AntiVirus to Symantec AntiVirus, (that way they won't have to pay Peter Norton x amount of dollars per copy they sell. [Roll Eyes] ) So actually they call it SAV 8.0 and it is the corporate edition. The download from their site is about 454 mb. The best thing about it is the vtdm or vdtm (whatever they call it..) has been reduced down to 150 kb from about 3mb. It now works kinda like liveupdate does.

I don't know if symantec will ever get it right.. [Big Grin] I talked to our rep a couple of days ago and she said they're working on a 8.5 right now, so I figured just as w/ 7.00, and 7.50 there's going to be some major flaws, I'm not going to install it until the next build, but I'll test this build.. [Razz]

When I got back to my Office this morning (I was away), my copy of NAV (SAV?) 8 was waiting for me.  WOW! That was quick!  I had to look up this post to see when I ordered it.  Now I know I wasn't dreaming.

Only thing is... now I'm way to chicken shit to install it.  How about there guys... any good news stories?

Situation: You want to know the new features and enhancements that were made to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0.

Solution: The following are the new features and enhancements in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0:

Upgraded NetWare support: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition supports NetWare 6.

CPU utilization improvements: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition now provides additional settings for configuring the CPU priority of scans.

New Client groups: In earlier versions of Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, all computers that were managed by the same parent server shared the same policies. The client group feature provides more management flexibility by allowing you to create logical groups of computers within server groups. Computers that are managed by the same parent server no longer need to share the same policy. A parent server is a computer that is running Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server that communicates with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Clients to obtain configuration updates and to send alerts.

Smaller virus definitions files size: The sizes of virus definitions files that are used by the Virus Definition Transport Method have shrunk from 3 MB to under 150 KB. The reduction in file size significantly decreases network traffic in environments that use the Virus Definition Transport Method.

Automatic Enabler: You can configure File System Realtime Protection to allow users to temporarily disable protection and have it automatically enable after a set time interval elapses.

One button update: The Symantec System Center now offers quick access to virus definitions updating, which is accessible from the system hierarchy, server group, or parent server level.

Multiple LiveUpdate servers: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition now supports multiple internal LiveUpdate servers.

Continuous LiveUpdate: Continuous LiveUpdate allows you to manage virus definitions file updates for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients with an Internet connection, but infrequent or no connection to a parent server. You can specify a maximum number of days after which definitions are out-of-date. When definitions exceed this date, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition automatically initiates a silent LiveUpdate when it detects an available Internet connection.

Quarantine Purge:The Quarantine Purge feature allows you to automatically delete files in local Quarantine directories that are older than a specified date.

Tamper protection: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients create and forward events to their parent servers when a specified set of registry keys are modified.

Improved server-group security: Server groups no longer have a default password, and you can also force a server group to have a password.

Enhanced event forwarding: Earlier versions of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients forwarded a small subset of possible events to their parent servers, including:
Scan start
Scan stop
Scan aborted
Virus found

This set of events is forwarded by default, but now you can configure Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients to forward all events to their parent servers.

Enhanced file and folder exclusions: When you configure scan options for a group of computers, you can now exclude specific files and/or folders by typing the paths of files and folders that you want to exclude from the scan.

Enhanced rollouts to secondary servers: The pool that is used for client updates is now multi-threaded, which optimizes network and CPU usage. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition primary servers now push virus definitions updates asynchronously to clients and secondary servers and handles secondary server rollback.

Improved scanning: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition improves scanning in several ways:
The engine that is used to scan compressed files now decomposes the files in memory, rather than on disk. This significantly increases overall scanning speed.
Supports the scanning of Symantec Ghost files on Windows computers.
Optimizations to Realtime scanning and file exclusions significantly reduces scan time.
Delay scanning on portable computers if the computer is running from its battery. The scan will run once the computer is reconnected to a wall current.

Hierarchical Storage Management: Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) automatically migrates data from server hard disks to another type of storage, such as optical disks and magnetic tape. HSM systems monitor data usage patterns and make intelligent decisions about which data can move to slower devices and which data should stay on server hard disks. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition now provides control over what should be scanned in an HSM system.

Enhanced Symantec System Center: The Symantec System Center now provides columns that display the status of virus definition updates, and the last check-in time for clients.

File System Realtime Protection status and notification: The Symantec System Center now displays the File System Realtime Protection statuses of managed computers. In addition, a warning dialog box appears on computers that have File System Realtime Protection disabled.

Enhanced Discovery: The Discovery process has improved in two ways:
The topology service manages Discovery data more efficiently, which makes the Discovery process significantly faster.
The Discovery process is now server-group based. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition queries the primary server in the server group for the secondary servers that are known to them, and then pings each secondary server. Building the list of secondary servers from the data that is returned by each secondary server lessens the possibility of a server remaining undiscovered during the Discovery process.

Snooze: The snooze feature allows clients to delay a scan for a set interval of time. You can enable the snooze feature and set snooze intervals from the Symantec System Center console.

Symantec Packager: Symantec Packager lets you create, modify, and build customized installation sets (or packages) that you can distribute to users on your network. Using Symantec Packager, you can tailor installations to fit your corporate environment by building packages that contain only the features and settings that your users need. Symantec Packager is available for Windows NT/2000 only. However, custom installation files that are created with Symantec Packager can be installed on any Microsoft 32-bit platform.

Been there... read that... no T-shirt...

OK... mustered up some courage and tried an unmanaged install to my home machine.  Had a tough time to shoe-horn it in.  Uninstalled 7.61 first but then 8 rolled back on install.  Tried to reinstall 7.61 but it too rolled back.  Did all the usual cleaning out of the registry but still no-go.  Finally got it to go by manually creating the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec and giving myself full perms.

Need further testing...

Hmmmm... sorry to hear that Les.

I'm in class all week, not sure if I'll get time to do testing.

So it would not install "over the top" of 7.61?

Do any of the Docs say anything about that?

Did you home system have anything "special" about the 7.61 install or possibly Registry edits in the past that may have influenced a problem here?

I talked to our technical systems engineer, or whatever his title is [Roll Eyes] , at symantec and he said that the def size has actually been decreased to 50-60 kb, depending on how long it's been since the last update. He also said that it would send the entire 3mb file if it's been around a month since the last update..
He also said I could install this over the top of 7.60 or 7.61...I'll have to test that...it didn't work when I went from 5.0x to 7.0x or from 7.0x to 7.6x

I have a nav manual uninstaller for 7.5x and 7.0x versions I got from symantec, if any of you want it let me know.

I've looked at the ssc and it's quite nice, clients can pause a scan.

I sent an email to our remote sites and told them this version was out there to install and play with but advised them not to roll it out. I've learned to NEVER install a .0 version of anything, especially Symantec's antivirus. One of them did install it and it didn't install the vpmsece.dll snap-in for outlook, symantec's fixes on their site didn't work so now he gets to uninstall it and reinstall it. I got to tell him I told you so.. [Big Grin]

Bottom line...I'm going to test this to get used to it, but I'm not going to roll it out until they come out with another build of it... [Wink]

Okay... WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK

I downloaded the 465MB zip file of NAVCE 8.0 and attempted to install it.

Target Machine: Cleaned %temp% folder and restarted machine.

Locally logged onto System as Administrator
Windows 2000 Pro w/SP3
Windows MSI Installer v2.00.2600.2
Running NAVCE v7.61.932 (Engine 4.1.0.15)
Defs 09/04/2002 rev 3

Clicking on Install Symantec AntiVirus, then
Install Antivirus Client returns the following.

Symantec Packager
An error has occurred that prevents this installation from completing.

.

Well, that was a real helpful error message. Click OK and it quits completely.

I guess I'll have to wait for an updated version as well to install onto my test machine.

Looks like you point zero fear factor folks are right on this one. 8.0 doesn't work out of the box for me either.

Hmmmm, maybe it's a perms issue on a subkey. If you remove NAV and you have no other Symantec products installed you could delete and recreate the key and add the perms again.

Not very useful error reporting.  Basically for me, it was a case of it rolling back right after "preparing virus definitions" or something of that nature.

Symantec has a KB article called "How to create a detailed installation log for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0".  I can't paste the link 'cause it's sooo looong.  Goto http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/products/sav/sav_8_ce/index.html and click "Knowledge Base" and then enter the search "install log"

Not sure,

At this point in time, I'm starting to think it may be related to the Microsoft SP3 update I've recently installed. Starting to see similar install issues for other applications. We've had problems where the Compaq Agents would not install on a Server with SP3 and the Exchange Admin Tools would not install on a Windows 2000 Workstation with SP3 but would on one similar with only SP2... Not fully pointing the finger at SP3 yet but seems very coincidental.
