When I read the above comments plus the comments about creating another forum in the COM's forum, I found myself getting very confused about were to go next.

I think this board has grown to the point where a management structure or policy is required. The issues of creating & maintaining forums plus the choice of moderators are becoming bigger & more complex issues. Unfortunately, I have no clear vision of where to take this.

I find myself thinking masken's suggestion of a an official crew might be a solution but as I said above I feel very uneasy about this solution because it seems to run counter to the culture & spirit of this board. I was one of the first to find this board & what attacted me the most about the board was I was accepted as one of the "in crowd" almost immediately. This spirit still exists today because I see 1 or 2 new members each month being recognized almost immediately as part of the central core.

On the other hand, I recognize this openness caused us to make the mistake of putting the newcomer "martijnl" as a moderator of the UDF forum. Also, this openess seems to be leading to an explosive creation of new forums seemingly without end.

I sure wish MCA was around, he always seems to have level headed suggestions about where to go next.

Anyway, I think these issues are too big to solve right now so I am thinking about going in the direction suggested by les.

I think that the board (the members) is (are) actually so well behaved that there's nary a reason to moderate extensively. However, choosing the moderators from the TOP25 and requiring them to check at least every couple of days is very resonable and shouldn't involve too much work.

I'd also try to limit the number of forums as much as possible since the regulars will check all of them anyway.

Jack,
I get the feeling that it is with great reluctance that you want to follow my suggestions.  I'm sorry if I'm not as level-headed as MCA.

With regard to Martijnl, that sore reminder could easily be excised.  That matter was quickly (partially) dealt with by DrillSeargent volunteering to co-moderate.

Let us start with that (UDF Library) for now.  Unseat Martijnl, (I'm sure there's concensus on that) and call for volunteers.  I'm almost certain that Jens would be willing to co-moderate it and personally think he would be an excellent fit.

There was talk of a co-moderator for the COM forum as well.  That too should be easy enough.  Put out a call for candidates.  If we don't get enough volunteers we could always ask for nominations to help motivate and move things along.

In the case of co-moderator roles, I feel the present moderator should have power of veto in case of a conflict of style otherwise we risk losing one moderator for another.  Candidates could (by private message) ask the existing moderator for consent to avoid public embarassment.  The existing moderator is also free to scout for candidates and his public endorsement would likely tip the vote.

BTW, I am not campaigning for any other moderator roles so you need not fear that I may somehow impose my brash style through moderator powers. [Big Grin]

Specific Questions,

I just did a survey of the top 25. It appears all 25 have posted something in the last 3 months but 5 have been absent for 1 to 2 weeks, 3 for a month and 2 for 2 months. Several show a pattern of being only infrequent vistors over the last year but about half of these 8 people might be on vacation because they were responding frequently until they suddenly stopped. MCA is one of these.

Does anyone have any problems with me calling for volunteers with maybe 4 of the top 25 on vaction?

Also, does anyone have a problem with me treating the Beta/suggestions forums as a combined forum with joint moderators?

Les,

I think I was just suffering from general angst. Has nothing to do with you. I am over it now!

about calling persons who are on vacation.
what comes to mca, we know he is on vacation, but about querying ppl lately silent, should need also the answer from them...

what comes to joint moderators, I quess it will do but also having those other vacansies done first and then if some of moderators are willing to co-moderate on other forum, they could be handed also one position on those forums...

unless, there is enough moderator-volunteers left-over to fill up them too...

MCA has announced repeatedly that he will be on a 2 month vacation until mid-October. I would therefore not consider him AWOL. It rather gives us a chance to catch up to his postcount.

BTW, if needed, I'll volunteer for additional duties.

This is so easy [Wink]

Just ask the one's that's active if they want to become a mod, and if they consider to have the time for it. This is always something that can be revised, nothing's dead permanent with this.

An easy way to decide Crew membership is by polls, as mentioned. If a Crew member becomes inactive, just contact them and ask if they have time, if not, pput the modding on someone else.

@ Jack Lothian
No, I didn't mean administrative boardrights when I mentioned a Crew. I meant only a Chat forum invisible to other than moderators and admin's (Henri). This is a place to discuss boardmoderation, for Henri to express how he would want the board to develop, and if he wants, delegate administrative tasks to persons. I don't know how well UBB handles permissions, but i'm sure there are some standard features for it.

The idea of having a Crew is somewhat contradictive. If the Crew does a good job, they're not needed (ie; they're not there to rule, but to help out), if you get my drift [Wink]

All boards *have* a "Crew". Wether they want it or not more or less. It's not a matter of someone being more important than the other... It's just a matter of the degree of time and interest for the board, nothing more, nothing less. I don't think the majority of members look at it in any other way either. Of course there are always exceptions, but I think most of us here are mature enough, right? [Wink]

I guess this reaches out towards Henri himself. My recommendation for him is; organize a Crew and just give a thought about what could be considered for delegation to the moderators and not. If all subsections are moderated like they already are today, focus cn instead be put on board technicalities, hosting and maintenance etc, and leave modding left to those that wants to handle it and feel they're up to it, based upon how you want the board to be run (ie; a Crew section with pointers). It doesn't have to be so danged complicated. Again, just make a run for it and see how it goes.

This is *so* right on sealeopard:

Dear,

First, the results are perfect.

A little bit late our input/feedback
  • "Moderator not active on the board for more than 3 months can be replaced" is our opinion.
It is always possible that he or she doesn't have the time or the possibility for it. Most-
ly he knows it before such period (f.e. vacation) is starting.
Moderators must have also the capability to stop, when he think not to have enough
time to be a good moderator or his work has changed in another direction.
Moderators may consider it as his duty to inform the other moderators about his (low) con-
tribution for the coming period on time.
So we subscribe Lonkero's remark about vacations too.

Also we shouldn't forget that most moderators belongs to two-millenium club or higher,
which may imply that they will be active on this board.
  • each forum needs to have at least one moderator. so it is always possible that some
actions can take to it without the requirement of intervention by Henri.
  • for forums with two or moderators no one is in our opinion the boss. We are working as team.
Each moderator can support members with their reactions.
  • Jack your remark I sure wish MCA was around, he always seems to have level headed sug-
gestions about where to go next.
we like, but a the guys did a great job during our
    absence.
greetings.
