Wow Howard, amazingly long article there. Not very many people take the time to document.
NetIQ does something with SID mapping between the accounts. I don't have all the details right now, but it worked well for us. It copies the user profile for us and maps the old Domain SID number so that permissions remained in tact.
I'll see if I can find the internal working details of it, but not sure if I can get them or not.
