All my progress on using Kixforms is halted due to an odd problem. I am unable to register Kixforms.dll. The error I receive is

DllRegisterServer in kixforms.dll failed.
Return code was: 0x8002801c

This problem first appeared after we changed domains and I moved all data from my old profile directory to the new one (to preserve settings, data, etc.). I am using Windows XP Pro. I can register KixWinVB.dll, but I cannot register any version of Kixforms. Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks,
Ben

This seems to be something to do with registry permission problems. What I would try, as a test, is to manually uninstall Kixforms by deleting the following keys (assuming v 2.0.3):

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F89DF848-618A-46F9-8A1C-396EA442BDD3}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Kixtart.Form

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Kixtart.Form.1

Than re-register with regsvr32 ... does this help at all ? Plus, do you have the previous version (v1.27) installed ? That would show-up as seperate objects with ProgId's like

Kixtart.Button
Kixtart.Frame

etc ...

These have become obsolete with V2.0

I believe that error speaks to the rights to write to the registry. Are you at least a Power User or Administrator on your PC?

I am logged onto my PC with a domain account that is in the local Administrator group for the PC. This does seem to be a registry permission issue. I've deleted the entries that Shawn mentioned, and when I run regsvr32 it still fails with the same error, however it does recreate the entries. I changed my permissions to 'Full Control', however it is reset on this Key after running RegSvr32 back to 'Special' (Full Control on this Key only - but on each Key in the section). I hope this is as clear as mud.

Thanks again for your help.
Ben

Might try it again but also purge the TypeLib pointer ... think its located here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{C8DCCD39-471D-4AFD-8EA2-89604A9C6252}

Interesting, I was unable to even look at the TypeLib registry setting. After much finagling (MS Word gave me correct spelling [Smile] ), I finally got the permissions changed. I gave myself rights to all the keys and now Kixforms looks to be working, however the register command is still failing with the same error. I'm not too concerned at this point as I can finally continue working on my scripts. This could very well be an issue for the next version of Kixforms and I would like it working, but it is no longer a hot item for me.

Thanks for your help Shawn.

Not too sure why this happening ... will have a boo at the Registration code tonight ... most of this stuff is pretty standard across all COM objects ... when I did a web search on this error ... saw a few references to it happening in other components ... but no difinitive solution as in "this is how to fix it for good".

I guess this came about with that profile move you made ... I've been registering/removing/re-registering forms for long time now (many times a day in development) ... no issues yet ...

But I think there are different "levels" of Registration sensitivity that can be made ... will have a lookie tonight and if I see anything, will advise ...

Well, I finally got my situation resolved. There is a process (very manual) that can be performed that will migrate a profile from one user to another. It's just too bad that I figured this out after I ruined my original profile. I fixed my problems by running a repair Windows XP off the XP CD. If anyone wants to know how to migrate a profile (and its settings) to another ID on a different domain, just send me an email.

Thanks again,
Ben

I did this once for our entire company when we were divested from our parent company.

Fun stuff, eh? [Wink]

Indeed. I spent way too much time figuring out what I did wrong. Hopefully we can prevent this frustration for other people.
