might be wrong, but as I know for basic services it does not...
they have this functionality in normal installation packages that it asks for user if he want's to replace the file...
so if there is in system32 file with same name and version ask user.
if it's older one or not existent, just install.
this way you don't need registry knowledge for your package...
uttleast for dll part.
other part is keeping your own distributions separated. I do it in registry like proper apps do.
some do it in ini
anyway, keeping the info and settings of the old version when update is installed gets additional smilie from users...
