jtokach jtokach Seasoned Scripter Registered: 2001-11-15 Posts: 513 Loc: PA, USA	I don't want to step on anyones toes so I want to verify a few things and get some feedback. I have a 'program' written in Kix and KixGUI that contains several scripts, dir structure, reg entries, etc.. I have created an installable exe for the package that contains Kix 4.02 and KixGUI 1.1 but there are several issues. 1. Even though I packaged the above as per the redistribution clauses in both (entire original package), I'm sure people who already use kix may not be too pleased that I'm droping another copy down. And together they add almost twice the size to the package. Removing kix from the current install position would render any shortcuts in the start menu and on the desktop useless, as I have no means of determining where you have Kix. I've also seen where some have 3 different versions of Kix in their path!? 2. The installer (SpoonInstaller) automagically registers any dlls it copies. That's a major issue. 3. Creating documentation to setup the program to suit each individual box, is a pain in the ass and defeats the purpose of using an installer. Creating two seperate installs is an option, but not one I really care for. I'm sure someone has been down this road. What's a man to do? Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks! Remove Kix and say what files must be changed (.lnk etc.) Why not make the .lnks point to kix32 and not path\kix32... Users having more than 1 kix32 in their path??? 2. Maybe use IExpress to package your data?? 3. Lonkero Lonkero KiX Master Guru Registered: 2001-06-05 Posts: 22346 Loc: OK	my bbcodeparser had... has installer. selfmade though. there is no one other than les using old under 30k bandwidth, so making the size double at download time and securing the program really works is right way to go. the thing about adding kix is that it has to be the right version working for your install. the same as I do for checking for kixforms, you should check the kixgui build and install if nessecary... my installer size doubled just because had to include msm license blaa in it. and finally, leaving part of the packet is just the same as creating one of these linux patches... you have to fight 10 hours to make them suit your system. I would make the full package and then maybe add the package stuff in subdir at the download area named dist or something. 1.5 cents... - _________________________ ! download KiXnet

So user would be required to download 4.02 and change the path... Not familiar with IExpress. Any other details? Multiple packages... How are you finding where the registered version of KixGUI is located? My install path can be found at: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D6F588A1-0D18-11D6-8426-0050224019BC}\InprocServer32 Does the GUID change from box to box? Lonkero Lonkero KiX Master Guru Registered: 2001-06-05 Posts: 22346 Loc: OK	mmm... might be wrong, but as I know for basic services it does not... they have this functionality in normal installation packages that it asks for user if he want's to replace the file... so if there is in system32 file with same name and version ask user. if it's older one or not existent, just install. this way you don't need registry knowledge for your package... uttleast for dll part. other part is keeping your own distributions separated. I do it in registry like proper apps do. some do it in ini anyway, keeping the info and settings of the old version when update is installed gets additional smilie from users... _________________________ ! download KiXnet
