The following error is generated inconsistently on the "Init" function. The createobject seems to have worked properly.

COM exception error "Init" ((null) - (null)) [1/1]

2002/01/31 08:04:55 - LookupADname: (NameTranslate) Init error:1 / COM exception error "Init" ((null) - (null)) [1/1]

This error is generated using the following code which has worked flawlessly on my W2K SP2 Laptop.

code:
$NameTranslate = CREATEOBJECT ("NameTranslate")
if @error <> 0
WriteLog ("LookupADname: (NameTranslate) CreateObject error:" + @error + " / " + @serror)
endif

$NameTranslate.Init ($InitType, $BindName)
; $InitType = 3 and $BindName = "" to connect to the GC
if @error <> 0
WriteLog ("LookupADname: (NameTranslate) Init error:" + @error + " / " + @serror)
endif

The error is occurring on a W2K SP2 Japanese OS with the User Lanaguage set to 0409 English.

Does anyone have any insight into what could be going wrong here? One time the user logs on the error occurs. The next time is may work. I personally have never had the problem on my computer.

No events logged around the time of the failure.

Howard,
Here's what i've got from M$ about the init method:
This method will fail if the computer is not part of a domain as no global catalog will be found in this scenario.

If the workstation have any problem to connect to the domain, the result you get seems to be what it should be.

Also, have you other W2K SP2 Japanese workstation to test this ?

Thanks for the feedback. I have been searching MSDN and TechNet for hours and could not find any useful info.

I will inquire about having other Japanese computers tested. The computer is a member of the W2K domain in Japan and they do have a GC there as well. The same computer that fails then works. This would lead me to believe that there is some communication or timing issure between the computer and the domain DC.

Thanks again for the info.

A trace showed that a DC in Great Britain responded to the Japanese Client. We are investigating further to determine why this server would respond. Apparently the Init method timeout before the bind operation was acknowledged.

globalization is nice thing.
we need no more domain in our companies.
just do a huge global domain which's DC's are located in UK. this way centralized network would be (as servers are conserned) really easy to maintain...

Hey Lonkero,

That is exactly what we are in the process of doing. Condensing all domains to one Resource domain for Everyone.

The less the domain the easier the Administration!

Yeah, saw that, but it doesn't give much info. After researching more I think that the actual Init failure was caused by a lack of rights on the JP server that tried to service the request. The logon domain is still NT in this case and there was no trust from UK->"Japanese NT4 logon domain". Time will tell.

But this brings up a new problem that needs to be resolved (Non-KiXtart). That is why was a W2K client in a W2K resource domain that is properly configured as part of a site to which the client is a part go to the UK for a GC bind request.
