Is there a way to tell what groups a MACHINE is a member of using the INGROUP command or otherwise?

What I want to do is create a Windows 2000 group with the same name as each of our 12 network printers, then make the computers physically nearest each printer members of the respective groups so that wherever a user logs in they will get the printers nearest them. As far as I can tell, INGROUP only tests for the USER's group membership, not the machine's group membership. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

Jeff

Well, if users log onto to different systems constantly my solution will not work. You could create user groups that have access to print to network shares assigned to the printers.

How many machines are we talking about? If the number is not too large it might be easiest to use the @WKSTA macro to determine what printer to map. If practical the machines could be renamed using a scheme which allows checking just a substring of the name (if they aren't already suitably named). For example, at our site the first part of the machine name identifies the department. I could therefore map the "Kyo_MCSD" printer for all workstations whose name begins with "MCSD_".

To build upon Fuse's idea, you could edit the workstation COMMENT field to include more specific info about the system that in turn is read by your script to set up printers. Of course, to do this you'd have to identify the user's or workstations requiring this edit, which leads back either user groups or lists of workstation id's...
