anyway, it does not seem to be error in use.
if you map the printer with net use and the try your run code I quess it does the same.
mmm...
quess also that if you try with:
run "%comspec% /c type d:\readme_first.txt > lpt1:"
will do the same...
so, I don't anyhow/way think it's in the use but in the print itself...
if you think about using run, you can try it with shell but probably it does the same.
so, pulling printing directly is the problem.
