Is there an ETA on the final release? Does anyone know how soon there will be any tools to automate deployment like kix400update does?

there no one else to answer so I give my quess.
ruud has been pretty silent lately and that can mean many things. I quess he isn't going to release the final inside 2 weeks but still I'm hoping he could do that before end of the month.

about the tools... I did not follow what kind of tools you are waiting for?
like "tools" found on kixtart.org -> scripts are allready available on kix2k1...

Lonkero,
Since I'm too chicken sh!t to try beta, I haven't even looked at 2001. I'm still running 3.62 and haven't bothered going to 3.63. Mind you, I run a mixed NetWare (file&print) and NT (application) shop. My main script is still NetWare. I use Kix for admin and application rollout.

I noticed several posts suggesting rolling out the Kix product using Kix363Update.exe or Kix400Update.exe found on wanadoo's site. I thought maybe someone here knew how long after each release, the deployment tools follow. Maybe I should post that question on wanadoo's site.

hmm...
I'm too bold then. I didn't even check my scripts, I just rolled out kix2k1!
neither did I test it in full environment. did it in the middle of the day. and no complains followed!
still, I'm wondering what tool you are waiting for? kix400update updates to kix2001.
and wanadoo keeps us informed and packages updated. so when the final release comes, it'll be approx. day or two when there is final release updt package.
anyways, I haven't got their tool to work, so I'm doing my "migration" like I've done it for many year now:
I use only kix32.exe, which is copied to local system (if not found there) with login.bat which then starts this local kix32.exe.
this way deployment is as easy as keeping the exe updated on netlogon share.

cheers, Lonkero

ps.
1. I don't understand why ppl use netware.
2. for exact answer to your wanadoo question you probably should ask from them.

still I have to wonder this message on kixtart.org's main page:
quote:
18 july 2001
Put KiXtart 2001 Release Candidate 1 online. Probably within one week the final version will be available.

It hasn't come true, so why keep it there...

The 'within one week' message is indeed very frustrating... I want to deploy kix2001 at the company I work for, but I will not deploy beta's. And the enumip function is something I was waiting for a long time.. Try to select Ip adresses with a subnet of 255.255.255.128 or so with just @ipaddress, it's hell if you have a lot of these. sometimes I even don't understand my own scripts anymore... I have a selectlocation script based on ipadresses and because we don't have a lot of ipadresses we're subnetting a lot.. An the console-less function is also something I am waiting for a long time...

Ruud is probably spending his time on a tropical island and enjoying himself while we are slaving aour butt's off

Well: 'Patience is a virtue' I guess...

Ruud had a cold, thus he's behind. BTW, I'm already running 4.0RC1 and have no problems whatsoever.

Jur,

Ruud is DEFINITELY not enjoying himself on a tropical island somewhere. I'm sure that he burned a ton of midnight oil fixing that DCOM regression bug (just recently discovered) - no small feat to be sure (he probably had to hand-craft alot of OLE functionality only available in the newer version of COM) ... and all this just to support vanilla versions of 9x and NT SP3 ...

As well - there a bunch of private beta testing going on - with most issues communicated directly to Ruud - I know for sure that he's still hearing about the odd minor bug or two ... and he fixes them like lightning ... To the best of my knowledge ... RTW should be very soon ...

Sorry, I don't mean to rant ... its just that I have the upmost admiration and respect for Ruud. Given the fact that he doesn't earn a red-cent off KiXtart, the support and product growth he provides is stellar !

Kix on my brother !

I never meant to slight Ruud for missing the timeline of the 25th and I'm sorry Jur made that comment. If there are bugs to work out, I'd rather wait. But as Lonkero stated, since the timeline has come and gone, the message on the main page should be updated.

Hmm when I re-read my message it does seem a bit too negative, sorry for that...

Maybe I should say that my work has become a *lot* less complicated since I discovered kix. When I think back to the before-kix-time when I tried to accomplish every automated task in nt4-batch with dozens of utilities I realize that I really have to thank Ruud for creating a simple to use powerful scripting language.

And with the weather we had in the Netherlands i can fully understand how he became sick..

Ruud, veel beterschap en ik kijk uit naar kix2001 final!!!

Dear LLigetfa, Lonkero,

Thanks for your reactions.

LLigetfa. The IExpress versions of kixtart are published within one day after
receiving a new release. On the board we published that no changes will be
done to our site and that mail or reactions on topics will be make for a
period of two months.
At this moment:
We check the new release first. Specially for the kixtart2001 RC3 release we
need to check: is it possible to use the earlier kx16.dll, kx32.dll and kx95.dll
files. Also the other related site items like:

  • kixref.exe
  • kixstrip.exe (also implementation of some small extensions)
  • kix400registry.exe (iexpress package)
  • kix400update.exe (iexpress package)
  • textpad 4.4 (syntax files)

must be upgraded. Which version RC2 or RC3?
Also Shawn's reaction in topic
http://kixtart.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000232
requires a carefulness analyze of topics.

btw: the current version kix400update.exe (= kix2001 RC1) works for us fine
in production environment. A Shawns comment on kix2001 RC2
Yeah - RC2 was sooo... close to Gold
requires also iexpress packages for this kixtart versions. But a problem is:
kix2001 RC2 is a private release. Possible that Ruud changes that status after
reading the good news from Shawn.

We are back, but first we decide to read and answer the enormous amount of mail and
kixtart.org topics. At the moment we want to read about 750 new topics and we
saw happening a lot of interesting things. For some topics we need more time and for
some we react with additional information.

code:

Reason: some information in the topics can prevent to change something in an
unwanted way.
f.e. Ruud change the function peek[b] to [b]KbHit.

At this moment you will a great amount of reactions to all forums on the board.
Soon we create new topics about the latest release when necessary.

Like Lonkero tell "wanadoo keeps us informed". To get informed
about changes to our site. Please send us a mail. You can use our
Mail - member of site
request which can be find on all pages of our site.

Lonkero and other readers/members. By creation of topic with special
attention for us we like to receive a mail with reference number of kixtart.org
topic, because we are reading and handling our mail first and it is possible
that your interesting comment or request has been gone in a black hole when
we don't see that message.
Greetings.

MCA,
Welcome back and thanks for the reply. I'm trying to 'read between the lines' of your reply. Are you saying that RC2 (build 49) may go gold? Since it is a 'private' build, it has not had the same degree of testing as a public release candidate.

I'm guessing new issues crept into RC3 that were not in RC2. From reading Shawn's post,Is BETA ready for Prime Time
I infer that RC3 is not so close, yet the feeling I got from Ruud's comments are that RC3 is one build away from gold.

If we are not "sooo... close" with RC3, pehaps RC2 should go public for broader testing. I am curious though, what prevented RC2 from going gold at the time?

FYI:
You're right. There were a couple of new problems in RC3.

As far as I know, the new technical issues that started with RC3 have already been resolved in the latest internal builds. Ruud gave the beta testers an update on Friday that indicated that most of the delay of the final release is now coming from non-technical issues at this point.

My Interpretation: It's not the job that's difficult, it's the people. ;-)

Regards.

Would this be the non-technical issue?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
- KiXtart 2001 Hold-up
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The highly anticipated release of KiXtart 2001 has been held up by
Microsoft's legal department for a couple months now. Apparently, the
reason for the hold-up is the kind and generous heart of the KiXtart
developer, Ruud van Velson. Having worked for the past 6 years to
enhance the widely used scripting language, van Velson has never asked
for a price tag to be attached to the product. However, in the 2001
release, he has asked Microsoft to approve his request to distribute the
product as "CareWare".

When asked about this, van Velsen responded by saying "... I have been
considering the option of releasing KiXtart 2001 as so-called 'CareWare'
(aka 'Charity-Ware'). Effectively, all this would mean is that the
documentation would include an appeal to the user to voluntarily donate
an arbitrary amount of money to a tbd charity. Note that the
functionality of the software itself would not be affected in any way."

KiXtart 2001 would not be the first product to implement this type of
licensing program, but is obviously the first to come from Microsoft.
Naturally, this goes against the grain of the Redmond, WA company. In
the meantime, thousands of systems administrators world-wide are
anxiously awaiting the KiXtart 2001 release. Some of the benefits of
this latest build include:

· Full support for the new Windows 2000 groups (universal and nested
groups)
· COM Automation (providing access to ADSI, ADO, WMI, etc)
· User Defined Functions
· Speed: KiXtart is faster than ever before

To begin testing the new features of KiXtart 2001, you can download the
Release Candidate 3 from: http://www.comptrends.com/include/details.asp?n=1&fileid=193. This
version will most likely be the same version that is released once the
Microsoft Legal Dept. lends their blessing to the generosity of its
developer.

Why not post the latest development build as RC4 until the legal / people issues are cleared?

Does anyone have any more news on the ETA of the final release as it all seems to have gone very quiet recently. I am very eager to implement the new features and capabilities of Kix 2001, however I sense that there are a few too many outstanding issues with RC3, therefore I am playing safe and sticking with 3.63 for now. It would be a major disappointment to find out that the release is being delayed simply due to legal problems especially after all the hard work of Ruud and the beta testers.

I concur. The private build should be released as a public RC4, while we wait for the liars. . . uh, I mean. . . lawyers to get done with it.
