Using Richard's KiXCrypt, I have created an EXE with the following (also included the WKIX32.EXE with the EXE as well)..

Anyway, here is the code -

$ie=0 ;release the object
The issue is that I can run the EXE fine once, but if I try to run it again, it does not work. It does not release properly.

Environment this is running in -
NT 4 - SP6
Citrix MetaFrame 1.8
Running through a published app..

$ie=0 will release the COM object but don't you need to do $ie.quit first?

I don't the $ie.quit is what I need.. I want to be able to launch IE without specific toolbars, etc. and then have the clients go do operations, and close.. The users should then be able to start IE again. I understand that ie is never closed, which is where the root of this problem exists.

The problem really lies in the fact that our users are running a Loan Entry program in a Citrix session.. There is a call made to Internet Explorer from this session and a credit report pulled for the borrower. Once the report is pulled, Internet Explorer is closed and the client goes on to the next loan.

This is driven by the fact that our Citrix Admin does not want the clients to surf the net while in a Citrix session.

Three solutions, best to worse:
  • You must already have a firewall in place, so simply deny HTTP FTP etc. to the Citrix machines. Easy to implement, and impossible for clients to circumvent. If *some* of the citrix clients need Internet access, implement a proxy. Again this is very simple and has many benefits.
  • Set the proxy settings for Citrix IE clients to a dummy address, and allow direct connections for local addresses, and any external addresses which are deemed acceptable.   • Set the Citrix machines to use an internal only DNS server

Well then you don't need COM at all. Just create a page with a bit of JavaScript and do a redirect.

I can understand starting a browser to do this, but when I ask ie to close the original window, it prompts to do so..

I have also tried location.href as well.

Theatre mode or kiosk mode does not work as it would be difficult to close the window. We wound up adding a drive mapping and writing the credit file to the client drive and it is picked up by the browser for processing.

In other words, COM/JavaScript were not used.

Kyder, when you call windows.close from a javascript, IE does ask you if you really want to. However, it does not ask you if the window is a popup one - strange.!

There is a way around it, but I don't have the code handy.

Another alternitive could be to use frames with Theatre mode. Have a small frame window at the top with a close button, and a large window for the main contents.

That way would might get away from IE not working again, as you would only need to clear the main window and reload it again.
