Do not run the script in Windows 95/98

following script to create a home directory for the users and map it to their workstation. I have run the RMTSHARE to share the folders
in the server, script do not work as a login script from Windows 95/98 (I have not tried from Windows NT or W2K). If run this script from the client workstation it work fine [Frown] . KIX RPC service and other kix files are in the netlogon directory also I have copied kix32 and other files to client system directory.

The login script is called by a batch script and I can see some thing is happening in the client workstation when I logon but script do not create the directory or map the shares as listed below.

md "\\myt-1001\home\@userid" @error=0
USE Z: /DELETE
USE Z: "\\myt-1001\@USERID"

it may fail on this one :

@error=0

This is not really even near to be supposed to work (I really dunno what it does and will test it right now to see what it does to my Notebook [Eek!] )

You can also not map the Z: drive during login. This is explained in the KiXtart Manual.

Oh. hehe

this is nice :

code:
break on

@error=0

get $

only displays a 1 on the console and does nothing more than this ... (it of course doesn't set @error [Wink] )

So ... the problem seems to be somewhere else

Do you have any Information in addition to this ?

{edit}
Oh dear ! Didn't even notize that there was a Z: drive supposed to be mapped .. tsk tsk !

Correct behavior. It print to the console the result of whether @ERROR=0, As @ERROR is 0 the comparison is true, thus the 1 on the console.

Friends,
After I removed the "@error=0" script worked.
The following script will Ctreate new home directories for the users and map to the P drive (insted of Z drive). Thanks for all your help.

md "\\myt-1001\home\@userid"
USE p: /DELETE
USE p: "\\myt-1001\@USERID"

I still must wonder does that work on win9x...

deep folder stuff... well, maybe kix can let win9x do that but looks scary...

couldn't you upgrade the clients? [Wink]

Joeel:

As long as the HOME folder is already shared the MD might actually work.

However, I am wondering why the MD is happening at all in a login script. Imagine having 500 people logging in and all are trying to create the folders all the time when loggin in.

However, as the original poster provided virtually nil information at all except his three lines of code, I'm not going to second-guess his intentions.

What I don't understand is why the folder wasn't setup with the same script that setup the share.

Also, have to question how the users have enough permissions on the home share to create the folder. Seems like a security concern.

Maybe another one of those homework assignments?

Also, the KIXtart RPC Service has not been installed, just copied into the NETLOGON folder [Frown]

I guess it's time to point to the fine KiXtart Manual [Wink]

Also how come the P drive mapping is working? This share doesn't exit?

Sorry guys, I am not familiar with in depth scripting.
Root directory of the home drive shared for every one, however, individual home directories are shared with "userid$" this will prevent other users accessing others home directory.
In terms of creating new directories - is there are any ways I can provide some command that if the directory is existed already do not execute the command.

please advise what is the best mechanism to do this.

Thanks.

if the root dir is shared for everyone, you have no security as the users can access each others dirs from there.
or did I understand something wrong from your explanation?

I think you have a catch-22 here. Yes you can test for the existence of the directory but even if you can create the user directory you can not create the share from Win9x clients. You must go to the server & create the share.

Jooel has a point, if you were to create a subdirectory on a share, it would presumably have the same ownership permissions as the mother directory which by definition must allow everyone full access. Thus your user directories would be wide open to everyone. You would have to override this on the server for each user.

Normally, one creates these kind of things on the server. Setup a script that creates the user account & share at the same time. Whenever you add a user, do it with the script.
