This is a followup to this discussion:

Discussion about changing moderators

I talked with Henri about this & he suggested this was a good idea since he has less & less time to devote to being the moderator. I offered to organize the discussion & commicate the results to him. To that end I have come up with a poll! Henri is leaving on vacation for 3 weeks on Friday, so I am going to try to finalize this by Thursday night. (At least I hope - I am off to visit my sister on Thursday in Hamilton so I am planning to use her computer to finish this.)

You can make 2 choices - 1 for moderator & 1 for backup. My list of choices is somewhat arbitary - members from MCA's top 25 list that have been active in the last year. If there is anyone on this list who wishes to opt out then say so in a post or send me a private communication.

To help with the choice check out MCA's summary of the activities of the top 25 here:

MCA's Top 25

and you might also like to check out MCA's summary of the UDF postings.

MCA's summary of the UDF postings

You might also review some of the responses given by these members. This forum tends to be of a higher level than the starter forum so a teckie might be a good idea for this forum. One of my first thoughts were Shawn & LLigetfa but these 2 are already moderators. You should give some thought to conflicts since there is actually 4 choices to be made. Two here & 2 in Starters.

Below I took the liberty of restructuring some of MCA's statistics.

code:

Member Median_Monthly_Rank Total_Posts Rank UDFs_Posted
LLigetfa 1 2076 3 3
MCA 3 2698 2 2
Howard Bullock 3 618 12 8
Shawn 4 2803 1 18
sealeopard 4.5 848 11 67
kdyer 6 1083 7 5
BrianTX 6 354 18
NTDOC 7 1205 6
Radimus 8 948 9 10
jpols 9 1512 5 4
Lonkero 9.5 957 8 2
Bryce 10 1808 4 12
Richard Howarth 10 425 15 4
DrillSergeant 12 588 13 3
Alex.H 12 385 16 2
bleonard 13 527 14
cj 14 923 10
awinkel 14 270 21
Will Hetrick 14 211 25 2
JackLothian 16.5 338 19
kholm 16.5 306 20 6
masken 17 216 23
DDavidson 19 378 17

The statistic "median monthly rank" needs some explaining. I went through MCA's 9 columns of monthly postings over the last year & rated each of the top 25 by month. This is the median value of the 9 columns. Thus LLigetfa got a ranking of 1 by the number 1 contributor in over half of the 9 columns. This number indictes who was a consistently high contributor over the past year.

Remember you have 2 choices:

Dear Jack,

Great work with statistics.

I had missing something on previous discussion, but it will not be bad that additional
moderators will introduce to "starters" and "scripts" forum.
Of course we agree with Shawn that the moderator will not do a heavy handed moderation.
Possible that same moderator on both forums can move topic to the right forum. Sometimes
"scripts" forum contains "starters" questions. The documentation of UBB isn't very clear
in this capability.

We suggest to introduce indeed two moderators. On the FAQ forum it works great.

For possible moderators Infopop has a moderator guide, which you can find on
their site page
http://www.infopop.com/support/ubbclassic/docs.html
greetings.

Jack, this is brilliant, democratic and well presented. Maybe at the end of the day, after the four moderators are chosen, we can have another poll to choose a co-moderator for the COM forum. hmmm, think i will wait a few days to vote though, too many great choices, can't decide.

This seems the best way to go about this. Fair for everyone... The hardest part is deciding over so many good people.

Just to note, to all involved. that the moderator isn't the all knowledgable guru (although he/she might be) but is primarily responsible for maintenance of posts elimination of crosspostings, moving posts to correct forums, removing unnecessary polls [Smile] , and potentially censoring/redacting posts that are 'offensive'/spam. (few, if any of those here) and is an active participant on the boards.

Bonus points for actually knowing their stuff... that being said, any of the top 25 are more than capable. Someone needs to write up a random vote generator, because it is way hard too choose between these candidates.

BTW, where are the girls one this BBS. Please don't say that we are all the typical MIS/programmer stereotypes... I see another poll coming up [Big Grin]

Dear Radimus,

Possible that the girls ask the boys to put a question on the board.
A suggestion for your choose: ask another to call a number between 1 and 25.
greetings.

I'm confused.. every time I look at this poll, the results are different (as in MCA has fewer votes?) .... why?

Brian,
Nthe numbers are percentages and not votes. So, as more people get votes, MCA's is being diluted.

Hmm. at present, MCA has 3 votes.. I seem to remember him having 5 before.. or maybe i was too engrossed in my kixgolf to be accurate on that.. lol.
{edit} I figured it out! I was confusing the starters forum with the scripts forum. lol

Can anyone confirm there might be something wrong. I haven't been recording the daily results & I only peeked in twice a day, but to the best of my knowledge sealeopard & Howard started in the lead & stayed there. (Although very recently Raidimus equaled Howard.) I don't remember MCA ever being in the lead & Howard's vote of 4 hasn't changed from 4 on monday morning. This is my recollection. Maybe you are mixing the vote here up with the vote in starters were MCA is in the lead.

From my recollection both polls seem to be functioning in a consistent manner. I have not personally observed any aberrant behaviour. I have also tried to vote twice & the system won't let me!

The poll for the scripts forum is clearly divided & this causes the percentages to swing wildly. I think this is to be expected though. We have about 7 or 8 members who got the right stuff for this forum. The closeness just reflects this fact.

Jens has a point though. Maybe I made the 2 polls too similar. I decided to offer similar analysis & choices in the 2 forums because I didn't feel comfortable about arbitarly deleting members in the top 25 or presenting different types of analysis which might appear to bias the direction of the vote.

That is my recollection, too, but the two polls look so much alike that it is really easy to get confused.

Voting seemed to have slowed down. Try to finish voting for your favourite by tomorrow. I hope to wrap this up by tomorrow night. I have to clear with the winners that they will accept the posts before I forward their names to Henri & he is leaving Friday for 3 weeks.

So vote before the polls close.

Unless we get a new wave of voters, it looks like NTDOC is running in second in both polls. If this continues I plan to let NTDOC choose his preferred forum & then nominate the 3rd placed person in the other poll. At present the possibility of a tie does exist. If this happens, I will break the tie by nominating the member with the largest number of posts. If you have any objections to this strategy speak up.

I am shutting down the ploll at 10:00 pm Eastern standard time. That is about 6 1/2 hours from now. (for different time remaining just add 6 1/2 hours to the time of the post.

[Big Grin] So vote!!!

Shawn,

Howard looks like a good choice to me. You both seem to speak the same language. Brian is another good choice. I find once you 3 get going the rest of us tend to sit back & watch.

For sure Jack, Howard and Brian were definitely on my personal short-list for that ... totally up to them though ... maybe we'll just wait until the dust settles from this vote ...
