We have several Win2000 desktop PCs where the user profile is set to roam. Their kix scripts work with no problem. We have just set up our first Win2000 laptop and have an unusual problem. If the user (roaming or local) logs onto the laptop, the laptop will continue the boot-up completely and THEN runs the script. However if the same user logs onto a Desktop PC the Kix script runs FIRST (which is what I want) and then begins its boot process. The problem is bound to be associated with the hardware, but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

BayouJeff -
Welcome to the board. Perhaps the Desktop systems have the RunLogonScriptSync value set within the registry, and Win2K laptop does not? Check ("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon", "WinLogon"). If exists, a value of "1" means delaying the appearance of the Windows desktop until script completes, and a value of "0" means no delay.

I'm glad there are great minds out there ... I never would have found this one. The one I used that worked, was to add the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\RunLogonScriptSync : REG_DWORD : 0x00000001(1)

Thanks for the help

BayouJeff, that reg hack should be part of your logon script so that any and all new computers automatically configured the first time they logon.

If used within the logon, HKLM is likely lacking perms for users to write to it. HKCU is a better choice.
To be honest, I prefer to do it in a group policy.
