Right you are my friend. I had to re-read that about 5 times before it sunk in. So really, everybody is happy. I'm happy because I can now use $= with impunity (hehehe). And since the single $ variable will never get resolved inside a string, nothing will ever break (in the new release). Yep - ok - I'm going to go crawl back under my rock now.
