I am new to KIX and want to run it on a mixed Win2K, NT4 and Win95 netwotk. I am having trouble with RPC (I think).

When I try to run KIX32 on 95 machines I get 'A required .DLL file, NETRAP.DLL, was not found.'

KIX32.EXE, KIX16.dll, KIX32.dll, KIX95.dll are in Windows\system directory. The KXRPC service is loaded and running on ABCCS01. I have tried a KIXTART.INI in the same directory with
[KXRPCMapping]
Default=\\ABCCS01
in it
and I have tried
SET KXRPC=\\ABCCS01 in autoexec.bat

without success.

I am sure this has been asked before but I would be grateful for some help.

Hmmm, the 'Net Remote Admin Protocol DLL'. (Don't worry I had to look it up too. ) = Routines library used for talking to or from downlevel systems; support routines for Rpcxlate and Xactsrv

I've never heard of Kixtart needing this one, and I can't find it on my win95 station.

What version of Kix do you use? Are you sure that kixtart returns this error and not some exotic SHELL command?

I found the answer!!! Nothing to do with Kix other than Kix triggered it. The problem was that somehow a WinNT version of netapi32.dll found it's way onto the machines in question. Cured by replacing with Win95/98 version

I tried the last suggestion, but unfortunately we had some Windows 95 machines mixed in with the batch, too so we had to actually put a netrap.dll and a netrap32.dll file in the same path with the Kix32.exe file. This worked ok except for the Windows 98 machines. Even if they had their own netrap and netrap32.dll files, they would use the ones in the path. We finally found the resolution for this. Simple register the netrap.dll and netrap32.dll file in the registry (we merely found a 98 machine that was working and exported the keys) and log out and when you log back in, Voila! the problem is gone!

Later!
