Greetings, I have previously worked in an environment using KixTart for batching updates and scripting drive connections (NT and Win95/NT workstations). I was impressed with it's functionality and flexibility in pushing code updates and managing network connections based on User ID. I never specifically wrote these files however, only tested and set them up on clients.
I have just taken a job where I have been allowed to update the 4-6 year old systems with all new workstations and servers.
I will be implimenting Win2K servers (Domain Host/Exchange Server and Data Server) and WinXP Pro workstations in a 10/100 ether DHCP envrionment. There are only 14 workstations total.
I have a list of questions in determining which route to go, either KixTart or ADSI and Active Directory. I much prefer KixTart for it's flexibility...
Are there any problems with the 32bit KixTart in the above listed environment. I don't think it will be a problem getting it installed on the Domain server, and I have read through some posts on gettng it to work in XP clients through Group Policy modifications of the login script list.
I will have a home drive, as well as a public share that needs to be mapped. The home drive will be a private share. In addition, a few users will have an additional private share for drives only they are allowed to work in (two users).
I will be using the backup function to automatically back up the profiles of users to the home drive. It will be schedule, along with a weekly defrag and AV updates via XP.
My aim is to use KixTart to change the paths for My Documents, Desktop, and Favorites in their profile to reflect their home drive (private share connected by Kixtart in the first place); connect the Public Share data drive, and connect private share drives dependent on user ID. I think I will also throw in time/date sync and a user MOTD/W as well (policy statement).
Beyond those functions, I don't need anything else in such a small environment.
Should I be able to accomplish this in the above given hardware environment?
What problems are commonly found?
Where can I get some sample scripts for the following functions that I can combine into (after editing) one script for use?:
1) Map Home Drive share as a specific drive letter based on User ID
2) Map public share data drive as specific drive letter not dependent on ID
3) Map private share drive for users based on ID to specific shares only they should have access to and need daily?
4) Time/Date sync script?
5) MOTD/Policy statement script?
6) Script to clean temp directories (cookies, temporary internet files, temp folders in root of C and Windows directory).
7) Scripting to force my documents, favorites, desktop, etc... to be on the Home drive.
If anyone has script samples, post away or email me please. I have a limited timeframe (who doesn't) and would rather stay with Kix and not pay a consultant to step in and do ADSI scripting in Active Directory on Win2K... I can wrap my wits around Kix scripting and handle it right now, not the other.
Thanks,
GNNR
