Hi,
the command ADDPROGRAMITEM works well in a kixtart.kix called by kix32 with the netlogon on NT for NT Worstation only.

Windows 95 says 'item added' but item isn't displayed.
if i run kix32 when the session W95 is open and not in the login script the item is added and displayed ...

Help needed , thanks .

Hello Marcilly and welcome to the board.

Can you please be more specific in what task you are trying to accomplish. I'm sure someone can help you further once we know what your tyring to do.

Are you trying to create a shortcut in a specific folder or something like that?

I try to add a shortcut for an application if i'm a member of a group.

The "ifmember" section works well, the shortcut works on NT but not on WIN95.

Well then please post your complete code section on what your doing and we can look and see if we find an issue, or if it is possible or not with Windows 9x.

Windows 9x and NT/2000 are completely different and there are things you can easily do on one that you can not easily do on the other.

Lets see your code please and we will try to help.

IF INGROUP("\\" + @WKSTA + "\CDROM") =1

ADDPROGRAMITEM ("c:\cdrom\toto.exe", "CDrom","",0,"c:\cdrom",0,0)
? "Add the icon..."
ENDIF

Works fine for NT2K , doesn't work for Win95 when opening the session, works on win95 after being logged and executing the script.

Is it possible that the update is being applied to the wrong profile on the Win95 machine?

Or even that the update is taking place, but then is being overwritten by a roaming profile?

- applied on the wrong profile : Dont' know ... but the script starts just after the user log on, before session arrives...

- overdiden by roaming profile : NO.

Then on Win9x you can run code to check for it and if not found edit the RUNONCE key to place a call that would run a script to do that the next time they restart.

This is about the only way to get around the profile not being loaded for the user at that point in time on Win9x.

Because you first need to test for it. Well, since you can not perform this task if the users current profile is not loaded to look at, you would use RUNONCE which runs AFTER the users profile is loaded. Then you should be able to check and alter as needed without running the script over and over and over again, which is what it would do if you just had it in the RUN section of the Registry.

HTH... Please post again if you need a better explanation or further assistance.

By placing an entry in RunOnce from the logon script, it would effectively run every time, or at least until such time as you stopped stuffing RunOnce from the logon script. If you placed it in Run, changes to the script would not stop it, unless you specifically added code to the script to remove the Run entry.

Yes, Les it would run everytime in either case unless you code it not to, which I guess I already assumed he would know that...

If not, then yes Marcilly you will need to code it to only install and run that once, or run everytime, but only add the link the once... what ever your needs dictate.

Hopefully we are only giving you food for thought and I don't think we mean to tell you what or how you must do it.

NTDOC,
My explanation was directed not to you, but to Marcilly. I assumed, that you assumed Marcilly knew the difference, but the way I interpeted his question, it may have been unclear, hence my explanation. So to put it in different words:

Anything you stuff in RunOnce does just that, runs once and then what you stuffed removes itself.

Anything you stuff in Run, runs every time until you remove it. It does not remove itself.

So, if you need to do something that needs to run after the logon script, but you want to initiate it from the logon, you stuff RunOnce during every logon. If under changing circumstances, you no longer need the post-logon script, you simply stop stuffing RunOnce.

I would think this to be preferential to stuffing Run, as you have finer control over it. FE, if you stuffed Run with a call to a script that needed to access a network share, and the user ran islanded (laptop or whatever) the share would not be accessible and it would error out.

All this, however depends on individual circumstance.

Marcilly,
Hope this helps. Sorry for the long dissertation. If you already know all this, sorry X 2. Now, back to the exam!
