This trick involves getting a piece of software and works under 9x/ME/NT/W2k..

Go and download this freeware jewel REGX120.EXE.

What does this do?

This offers a history/path dropdown in Regedit without having to extract each section of the tree you are working with in the registry. Within this dropdown, you can quickly copy the path of where you are in the Registry. Sure, ME and W2K "remember" where you were in the Registry, but this works for everybody.

I do not work for DCSOFT, but like the product.

Thanks!

- Kent

Thanks Kent,

I actually found it an annoying behavior and locked out the Registry from creating this update of where I was last. Don't know about Windows ME since it does not probably have permissions to set like 2000 does.

Just can't please all the people

Kent,

SCHWING !!!

Is this package a "wrapper" around regedit.exe or a re-implementation ? They give credit to MS regedit so I guess it's a wrapper ? And the extentions are "remember mode" and the drop-down keys !!!

Very nice - it's comforting to know that under the covers - it's good olde regedit - but with a fancy dress on !

-Shawn

It's definitely a wrapper. That's a good thing... love the drop-downs

THANKS.

Shawn,

Can't take credit for it... Well I could but

Article from Windows 2000 magazine. January 2001 page 69 by Kathy Ivens

When you use REGEDIT.EXE to view or edit a Registry entry on Windows 2000,
the system remembers this key and automatically returns to this key the
next time you open the Registry. To prevent this behavior you need to
use REGEDT32.EXE to change the security settings on a key.

Open REGEDT32.EXE and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit

Then select the LastKey entry, open it and delete the value. Then click OK
and close the key. Select the Regedit key again and then click on Security,
Permissions from the menu. In the permissions for Regedit dialog box, click
Advanced to open the Access Control Settings dialog box. Select your user
account, then click View/Edit. For the Set Value item, select the Deny
check box and click OK to return to the Access Control Settings dialog box.
A new item of the type Deny now exists for your user account. Select that
item and click View/Edit, then select the option at the bottom of the dialog
box to apply the permissions only within this container. This option limits
the Set Value denial to the Regedit sub-key and prevents the denial from
affecting the Favorites subkey.

Caution!!

Most people will notice that when you use this program in the Drop-down, it places the following for example -

code:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Really, it needs to look like:
code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

If you use the My Computer portion of it, Any READVALUE, WRITEVALUE, ADDKEY, DELTREE, DELKEY, etc. Functions won't work.

Thanks!

- Kent
