My kix logon statements sometimes don't run. I am using Kix 3.60. I have copied the kix32.exe, kx16.dll, kx32.dll and kx95.dll to the Win95 client workstations. I have a few workstations where either the script runs perfectly, executes part of the script or does not run at all. At the moment, I have 2 machines running the kxrpc service. I have verified that the script has been replicated to all logon servers. Can anyone offer anything else for me to check on? Thank you.

When I first started using Kix, I had this exact same problem. Sometimes, scripts would work fine, other times they would only partly work.

You say you've replicated the script to all the logon servers (DC's), have you also replicated the kix files themselves? but.. most importly, have you installed the kxrpc service on each DC? You'll find some functionality just doesn't work without it.

Sounds like the problem might just be those few workstations rather than your scripts/servers. Try to nail down if it's always the same machines that freak-out on you.. if you are able to establish that only those few work inconsistantly... well..
then either start troubleshooting those systems (look at shared dll files, startup-programs etc) or simply re-load one of them from scratch and wait and see if it fails again. If the one that was reloaded doesn't fail again, then you know you've got to repair the others. Also you might have strange network settings in those computers..
(WINS for instance, if it was set incorrectly it might confuse the machines when they try and resolve the servername of the server running KixRPC)

Good luck..

I have had the same problem, sometime ago. I have listed the possible solutions that might work for you.
1. Refer to Microsoft Ref Q161051, Q150589, Q150829
2. Install Microsoft Hotfix MSNETUPD.EXE which I have a copy if you require
3. Install KXRPC service on all NT Servers that are a part of the Directory Sync.

I've installed the msnetupd file but my problem is still occurring. What is your recommendation (regestry entries, ini file...) on pointing the workstations to the KXRPC servers? Thanks

I recently did some testing using KxRPC.
I have a test domain with three domain controllers. Only one of the domain controllers has the KxRPC service running.. the other two I turned off the netlogon service (thinking that if only the one domain controller was the actual logon server that it would also be the only one which kixtart requests RPC information from...) -- This was NOT the case.

It would seemingly randomly pick whichever domain controller it felt like to obtain RPC information. So I added a file:

kixtart.ini to my netlogon root with the following (where "MIS" was the domain controller for the domain "MIS_CORP":

[KXRPCMapping]
;MyDomain=\\MyServer1,\\MyServer2,\\MyServer3
MIS_CORP=\\MIS
;Default=\\ServerA,\\ServerB

and guess what-- no more failed RPC .. it obtains RPC information perfectly now for every single logon since I changed that.
IF you look in the manual, Ruud talks about a couple other ways to specify which servers should be the RPC servers (registry etc..) I happen to like this way because I can set it up for multiple domains and stick it in the general replication path and I'm all done.

whoah , what the heck..
I replied to this section and it caused messages to disappear (???)

As I was saying.. I figured out a way to make KixRPC work steadily... create a Kixtart.ini file (or use one of the other methods found in the manual) I found that just because a computer logs into a particular server doesn't mean that it will request it's RPC info from that server!?
