I have run into a very weird problem while trying to deploy my KiXtart scripts. All users at our remote sites logon to a server located here in the central office (Mostly NT4). Remote sites are connected by 2Mbps DSL lines. Within the CO all the KiXtart scripts work fine, however when I try to run the script on a remote computer the console shows up and then it sits there for a while before eventually Dr. Watson reports there was an application error. I was going to try and work around this by running KiX32 off the local drive however I cannot copy the KiX32.exe from the Netlogon directory!! It starts to copy and gets about 3/4 done and then it stops and sits for a while before giving me a "Cannot copy KiX32: Error performing inpage operation.".

There are some other weird anomalies happening with the executable. For instance, if I use an NT4 machine and r-click on the KiX32 executable in the netlogon directory it causes the whole computer to freeze for about 1 minute before it displays the menu. If I work with the executable anywhere outside of the netlogon directory it works perfectly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

This does not sound like a KiX problem but rather a network problem. Before you can get KiX to work reliably, you need your network to be reliable.

The network is fine....... I transfer tons of files everyday and have never had a problem. It definately seems to be related to the KiX32 executable. If I put a different executable in the netlogon directory and r-click on it the menu pops up instantly with absolutely no delay. Also just to test it out I put a 3MB executable in there and put a copy command in a temp logon script for myself and it downloaded fine without any problems. However if I try the same thing with the KiX32 executable it always gives me the Cannot copy KiX32 error.

Well then suspect you either have an in-use issue or perms issue. If you are trying to copy it from a KiX script which is running that copy, it will fail because it is in-use.

I am on the other side of a 512kbps WAN link right now and just copied KIX32.EXE over it just fine by simply dragging and dropping it from my DC to my desktop.

What I was originally trying to do was just run KiX32 from the logon directory without trying to copy it down to the clients or anything. Simply just run "KiX32 script" where script.kix had this inside of it:

SETTIME "\\PDC"
Use S: "\\Fileserver\share"
Use T: "\\Fileserver\share2"

That was it. When that didnt work (because i kept getting application errors) I decided to try and copy kix32 to the local machine in a batch file. so I set the users profile path back to "logon.bat" where logon.bat just copied KiX32 to the client machine but this also failed giving the Cannot Copy KiX32 error.

I also checked the Event Viewer on the machine that wasnt working and this is the event message:

Event ID: 3013
The redirector has timed out a request to "server"

where "server" is my logon server. Now why would it do this ONLY with the KiX32 executable?

My brain hurts now.......... I have now found out that the delay before the menu pop-up when I r-click the file also gives me that same message in my Event Log. I can r-click any other file in any directory on any computer and it works fine. KiX32.exe is the only file that causes this problem to happen. Immediately I suspected our AV software but after disabling it I still have the same problem... its a shame really I had great things in mind for the users here.

I'm not sure if anyone is even checking this thread out anymore but I just thought that i would let you know that with Version 4.10 the "r-click" phenomenom doesnt happen... however I still cannot copy it to a remote machine.

Keith,

One suggestion..

SETTIME "\\PDC"

Is probably your "bottleneck".

Have you looked into the use of W32Time for your NT Clients? W2k and above have automated time synchronization built-in.

If you want the W32Time and it's associated WhitePaper-
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ResKit/y2kfix/x86/w32time/

Is the deployment of KIX32.EXE not possible from the NETLOGON share? There are many examples including a deployment tool to do this.

Thanks,

Kent

no.
if you have copy problem, the problem is definitely somewhere else.
try to make a new copy of kixtart executable with different name next to the old one and copy it.

you know, copy is so simple thing that it has nothing to do with the files itself.
it just copies the 0's and 1's it has inside [Wink]

I agree with you and Les here.

However, there is another way with Setting the time. Where you set the time once at login, w32Time is able to set the time many times a day. This is especially true with people that run intensive applications on the desktop. [Smile]

kent, that's right.
but if one is unable to copy executable file around the network...
it has nothing to do with kixtart-scripting.

Keith,
If that snippet of code is your entire script, then you don't need KiX at all. That can be done with BATch.

Well naturally that is not my entire script. I used that for a simple test to see how KiXtart works. I agree with you guys 100% that the KiXtart program is not at fault here. However the fact remains that it is the only executable that wont copy properly. I did try renaming the file but it didnt help. My guess is that it doesnt like something that is in the Version tab when you r-click the file. Plus it keeps track of what the original filename was. Back to troubleshooting! =) Thanks for all your input so far.

Where are you trying to copy the file to on the local machine? Does the user that is logged in have permissions to that directory? If you're doing the 'copy-to-local' function via a batch file, what do you see if you put a pause at the end of it and run it manually?

Also, what happens if you manually copy down the kix32.exe to the local machine and then try running the script?

Couple of random thoughts here. Zip the EXE and try copying it to the SAME place you tried copying the EXE. What is the result?

Log on as an admin to that workstation and retry? Same result?

Log on as an admin w/ no logon script specified and retry. Same result?

Open up a command prompt and type echo %logonserver% to find out which domain controller authenticated your session. That will tell you where it is looking for logon script files. It could be that the machine isn't finished with the logon script yet and you're trying to copy a file in use.

HTH,
Tim

I am a Domain Admin and this even happens to me if I login at the sites. It is not a permissions issue as I can transfer any file I wish to the same spot except for KiX32.exe and WKiX32.exe. I really think it has something to do with the "The redirector has timed out a request to 'myserver'" message I get. I just tried transferring KiX32.exe in .zip form and it worked flawlessly... this is very weird.

UPDATE:

Ok I figured if it can copy the file in zip format maybe if I just rename the original file with a .zip file extension I could just copy it over and rename it...... nope it wont copy. On another note if I put in the unc path to the workstation at my desk it copies just fine. Unfortunately this isnt acceptable as my workstation isnt on all the time.

Keith,

So.. The real issue is that you cannot copy the files from the DC to the client?

I Think I figured it out!!!! Its the switch! All of the servers are plugged into their own switch so I took one of the file servers that would not work before and moved it into a different switch.... worked great! this makes things soooo much better!
