Hi Everyone,

Has anyone ever seen this before, my NT Wks machines are automatically re-mapping the last drive that was mapped with KIX. During the day, not directly after logon but a few minutes later the first one appears and a bit later then next.

E.g.
So \\servername\Sdrive is mapped to S:
Then Sdrive is mapped to t: then u:, v: w: to z:

The explorer is full of sdrive mappings by the end of the day.

yea, had similar issue with one NT wksta.

couldn't find any specific reason, so blamed some programs...
now it's upgraded to w2k and the problem is gone [Big Grin]

We are in the process of upgrading to W2K WSK, but till then, what to do?

You know with TweakUI one can deselect available drives, maybe a could sent out a registry hack that would deselect all available drives and leave nothing open - keep in mind for future drive mappings to make available again.

Any ideas [Smile]

I'm about 99% sure that this has nothing to do with kix...

you could try some things out to prove that anyway...

if it's some specific share that gets mapped to all those letters...
is it drive for some specific software?

our problem came with such drives...

also, does it matter if the drives are mapped?
it surely says that there is something wrong in the wksta and to remove the problem mostlikely means re-installing the whole system.

if the user can handle that problem until OS upgrade, that will leave you some free time.

oh, is there multiple users having the same problem?

this is a SPECIFIC NT issue, that has nothing to do with KIX

it has something to do with desktop shortcuts using network drive paths.

What is weird.. I have seen a similar type of issue in the past where the system maps two phantom w: drives.

I concur with Radimus. Shortcuts remember both the logical drive and the original UNC. When you place one of these shortcuts on an NT box (and use the shortcut - can't remember) it then starts to map additional drives.

There was a utility to neuter or make the shortcut "dumb" by using a certain program. After that the drive mappings stop.

SCUT.EXE will do this, see http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBA/tip0400/rh0422.htm

Wow - is all I can say - AND Thanks once again.

PS: Before KIX, I used normal batch files and back then I had this problem and believed that it might be my batch files but could never get any help on it.

Now since KIX - I hoped that problem would go away, but it had not.

I will test and get back to you with results and hopefully my problem resolved.

SCUT.EXE will do this, see http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBA/tip0400/rh0422.htm

You're welcome, but shame on you for passing this off as a KiX issue. [Wink]
