I want to set up a script that if some one logs on to my network it shares their drive to the rest of the network and maybe sets a default password.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Blitzkrieg

And read ABC's of KiXtart board etiquette and message to new forum users Section F so we know what exactly you try to accomplish and what OS you'll need to support. Network design might also come into play.

Nevertheless, potential solutions will definitely depend on your particular network setup and the clients that need to be supported.

uhm...
not sure about windows_nt (rights issues) but isn't there "net share" also in wintosh?

if yes, that should solve it for win9x

I suspect it's a very messy setup and the list of OS smells like 'warez'.

The whole network will also run in 'Workgroup' mode.

Anyway, the whole idea sounds very strange and the main question is why this needs to be done. It pretty much violates any 'best practices'.

You aren’t being much of a help, it does not concern you where the OS's come from in fact the server needs to SUPPORT all those platforms because it is for when I host "LAN parties" people come over with there own computers and there OWN OS's and then we set up a network and use it to play games on. I want the server to configure the clients computer for file transfer and map a drive on the server its self. This lessens the time we have to spend configuring so we can use our time better.

So pleas stop trying to harass me and try and contribute to this forum, an answer will not only help me but also other people that would like to know if this is possible you are wasting my time and other peoples time.

no, actually you are wasting our time.

by not specifying properly what you are after.
by speaking into many ways.

so, be clear in what you want and how would you want it.

if you want a server to share automatically a computers drive which is not even logging to the server...
you don't even have a clue what you are after.
that is my quess.

Are you wanting the clients to map to a share on the server...or...are you wanting the share out each client computer hard drive? The first would make sense. The second doesn't make sense.

So, you're finally providing some information that actually makes sense. Still, do you run your network in 'Domain' mode or 'Workgroup' mode? How are the user acounts set up? Do the users have administrative rights, either local or global? Is there a login script?

BTW, it really does not concern me where the OS comes from. However, if somebody provides this laundry list of OSes, and wants to set up a network whithout even knowing what he's doing, then yes, it is a valid statement.

So, 'Blitzkrieg', let's do some 'Shock and Awe'. Please read up on the capabilities of Windows 9x with regards to remote administration and Windows XP Home with regards to network connectivity. Then read up on network authentication. Shock: Barely any remote admin for Windows 9x, no domain support for Windows XP Home. Awe: Not really scriptable from the server-side at all, doable with client or login script but will require extensive network reconfiguration.

So, if that's not enough, please provide more details.

sorry, I must fight you now.

you ask us to read your posts which say nothing but that I don't know.

then you say that we are not helping and we should know better and we should not waste your time [Mad] [Mad] [Mad] [Mad]

so what you want is a server side script that as soon as any OS plugs into your LAN (if you know what that is) it will automatically mount it's local drive on to the server.

With no central authentication model, no domain model, and no knowledgeable 'admin' person to do the work, you are asking for magic.

With the attitude you are showing, you aren't likely to get any help...

beyond the fact that what you want to do makes no sense. for the simple fact that in a network environment, eventually the server will run out of drive letters to mount the client drives to.

My suggestion is for you to start reading books on networking... and manners

I kind-of enjoyed this thread. It doesn't happen everyday that somebody tells an old post-count fart like myself to
quote:
read the posts befor [sic] you reply
. Or even suggest that I do not
quote:
... try and contribute to this forum
Gotta go now, have to read some posts and come up with a way to contribute to this BBS in a meaningful way. Maybe I gonna play some Golf by myself? [Wink]

Blitzkrieg,

quote:

What does this mean?

Is this like trying to drive a car that does not exist? Come on, if you try to create a script that you have nothing to test it on... How do you know if it is even right? Or, the right direction?

There is my two cents/schillings/lira/etc.

Yeah, no problem. Except Your Attitude

NET USE * \\MachineName\ShareName /user:DomainName\UserName

Beyond that, there is no automation available for unknown variables.

Normally I would go out of my way to help you, but with your current attitude, I don't think anyone here is going to help you any further.

You don't ask for something, then Demand as though you are the King or Own it. Grow up and learn some manners.

Howard or MCA, please feel free to close this topic. It is NOT KiX related. It is Network related (which normally would be okay, if the person showed a little gratitude and manners).
