Hello all

I have been scripting using KiXtart for a couple of years now on Windows 9x machines and have been asked if I could write some logon scripts for another school which uses Windows NT and 2000 machines.

I was wondering is there is anything that I have to be aware of when scripting for Windows NT as opposed to Windows 9x.

Thanks in advance

Registry and NTFS permissions and rights to install software would probably be your biggest challenge.

Hello LLigetfa

Thanks for the quick reply.

I do not think that the scripts are going to require Registry functions so I should not come up against this problem.

As for software installation rights, Administrators should be able to perform the installation, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, only administartors should be allowed to do this. With MSI Installers you can use AlwaysInstallElevated to enforce this. Also, implement policies form the very beginning. It'll make hardening the workstations much easier.

Hello Sealeopard

With my scripts for Windows 9x I write the policies straight to the Registry and use KiXtart to decide what settings to write as it is more flexible that way, and more reliable.

I take it that this way will not work for NT because of Registry permissions?

Thanks in advance

Kevin,

The other issue you will encouter on Windows NT is the ability to write files below the %windir% folder if the user does not have sufficient rights either..

In fact in script testing, we encountered rights issues with writing files to the %windir% folder itself.

Hello Kyder

Thanks for the info, this is looking like it is going to be more of a job than I first thought.

Bye for now
