For some reason Kix has started generating Illegal Operations (in W2K and XP..not NT4) in the NTVDM module. Can anyone shed some light on why this might be happening...currently have lots of unhappy users....erkkkkk.

FWIW...
Grant...
I just got a "NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal operation" error when installing/testing/executing a 16 Bit Legacy application on WinXP Pro...
No resolution yet, but in my case this is absolutely not a KiX issue...

Resolved my NTVDM error with this ...
  • Copied Ver.dll from %systemroot%\system32 to %systemroot%
  • Edited %systemroot%\system32\config.nt
    code:
    dos=high,umb
    device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
    files=75
    shell=%systemroot%\system32\command.com /p /e:4096
    ntcmdprompt

  • Edited the PIF file used to launch the application
    quote:
    Memory Allocation
    EMS Memory == Auto
    XMS Memory == Auto
    DPMI Memory == Auto
    Conventional Memory Total == Auto
    Initial Environment Memory == Auto

  • Did *not* change Compatability Mode in PIF file
