Can anyone help?

I am transfering file from an old Novel Server 3.2 to a nice spanking sparkly Windows 2000 Server. Unfortunately mapping drives can be a nightmere!

Under Novell you can map drive shares to one mount point ie G:\General\Personnel and G:\General\Finance. So the user sees under the My Computer G:General only and when they click on the icon, they see only the folders they have a explicit(?) rights too.

I did think of Using INGROUP command and point to G:\General\Personnel and then run a seperate commend with another INGROUP statement but G:\General\Finance. But this will not work.

Any ideas, Folks?

Cheers

You might want to read the KiXtart Manual Appendix A!

Windows 9x cannot 'deep map' drives
Windows nT can 'deep map' drives if SUBST is used
Windows 2000/XP support 'deep map' witht he NET USe or the KiXtart USE command.

You can also map only one share per drive letter.

However, you might want to set appropriate permissions on subfolders to replicate the Novell behavior under Windows. For example, you can prohibit certain groups/users to even 'list' a folder/file. This would create a similar effect as what you described.

Since you mentioned that you are now using W2K Server, have you considered DFS. If you're unfamiliar, here's some details from the internet: Collections of files located on various Windows 2000 servers and workstations can be tied together under a DFS root share, so it is no longer necessary to mount a drive for each server individually. Maybe something along these lines would help.

jens, the similarity is not so good as it still shows the subdirs where you don't have access to...

It's not an issue of deep mapping. Surfcat wants to map below the point where NTFS permissions would (in his mind) allow someone to see the sub-folder. I believe however, that NT (Win2K) does not allow this.

Thanks for the replies. Not quite sure what to do now. I think I will try denyiung the right to list the subfolders. But I am not sure this would work.

DFS could be a solution, does it work with Windows 98 Clients?

Maybe I should have upgraded to Netware 6!!!

Cheers

ps My mind is ok Thanks!

I think you do not understand what I want. In Novell you can map one drive letter to one drive/partition/volume. Then give the individual rights to actually use the folders on that mount. The folders that the individual cannot use, they cannot see. Its a really useful tool. The nearest thing Windows Server has is home directories. The user only sees the folder they have rights too.

So any ideas?

surfkat,
I understand exactly what you're trying to do. I run a NetWare shop for file and print. I have not been able to duplicate that functionality in NT.
