Windows 9x registrys are available remotely by installingthe Remote Registry service.
Also, WMI can be installed on Windows 9x and NT in order to magage them remotely.
Why not automatically create a list of computers and their operating systems during login, for example as a .INI file. This file can then be referenced for your other scripts.
