Ok, Ive a big problem that I need sorting. Basically my users are able to access each others work through the file menu in word etc. Can anybody tell me the reg key that switches this off!

No sorry you are right.. The thing is the users and administrator only has access to the folders through permissions as you would expect. However, after one user logs in, and works on a document, the next users logs into the same machine and can open and modify the previous users work they are gaining access through FILE >> menu that drops down in Word 97..

Tried actually opening a document logged in as a usual user and it loads the previous users documents....
Is their not a reg key that allows you to reset previous users documents to zero it is a setting in tools >> options >> general tab..?

Where exactly are the files located (server\directory or local hard drive) that you are questioning? What is the operating system of the client where this is happening?

So I thought the users dirs are stored in \\[server]\[folder]\[userfolders$] and the permissions are user has full control as does administrator and teachers!!
Either way I have tried looking for the reg key for this ooption to no avail...

You need to verify the file locations and permissions for a file that can be opened in this manner. WORD.exe can not supercede NTFS file permissions.

The problem is that users are accessing files they shouldn't be able to.
Removing the MRU list will simply mean that users are less likely to accidentally stumble into others files, it doesn't address the security problem which is what you must address.
If you are going to rely on security by obfuscation (really a very very bad idea ![[Frown]](images/icons/frown.gif) ) , don't forget other obvious place like Start->Documents and recycle bins.

Dear,
In a network client/server environment with an unique username/password for each
person it shouldn't be possible, that users see others settings.
Above story looks like that different persons are using same username/password
combination.
To prevent tracing back we are running always our cleanup.kix, which is removing
all kind of recent file lists. Mostly stored in registry or local confi-
guration files. Also "Documents" in "Start Menu" is a place people are liking.
The biggest problem with MS-Word is, that it is storing those MRU info in a binary
file. The other MS-Office programs are using the registry for that kind of informa-
tion, but the way of storing isn't always the same.
Our suggestion for MS-Word is: use policies to set "recent list" value to ZERO in
MS-Word.
