First of all, thank you for reading this post. I'm sure this is a re-occurring topic but one that I don't know the answer to, yet.

I am migrating from Novell to W2K and am trying to create a login script that will allow my 9x PCs to map the H: drive to a sub folder of a share. (I.E. \\server\share$\'%username% or @userid' for KIX) where %username% is a folder.

However, as I have learned, 9x doesn't map to sub folders of a share. Do I have any options?? Can Kixtart KICK me in the right direction?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello and welcome to the board.

Short answer NO, the folder must be shared for Windows 9x to map root there.

Please see this other post for mapping information. A long post, but please read through all of it to gain further understanding of this subject.

PLEASE HELP WITH MAPPING HOME DIRECTORY

You will also find this issue addressed in the KiXtart Manual Appendix A.

My recommendation would be to create hidden shares for your users based on user IDs. You would end up with a folder structure like this:
code:
d:\users\user1 with hidden share user1$
d:\users\user2 with hidden share user2$
...
d:\users\usern with hidden share usern$

You can then map to the user IDs with
code:
use h: '\\server\'+@USERID+'$$'

Jens is correct that the manual does "mention it", but is very sparse on explanation. That is why I directed you to that posting.

I agree with Jens... and you can even share all the user names in seconds using a FOR batch command as long as all the users are under one location as Jens shows.

Please post again if you need further information, and or just to let us know how its going.

Thanks Jen and Doc for your direction. I'm going to ponder this one for a while.

BTW, I love your comment at the end of your message about binary. The other techs LOVED it. (the ones who understood it, of course)
