FYI,

As one of the links that Jens provided. The MS Q-article says this was first fixed/corrected in Windows 2000 SP3

Not sure what there fix was, and or if it can easily be fixed for all clients or not.

If you do get it working on ALL clients including Windows 9x please provide the script to the board.

For those who might want/need this: I compiled a list of processors from that .PDF some time ago (have not yet used it, though!) but here it goes.
It may not display good, but copy/paste it into Excel and it will display neatly.

HTH,
Fernando Madruga

BTW: (Out-of-topic) When will this BB properly store info on the pages? That is, using CR/LF instead of just LF? Whenever I want to copy/paste something into my editor (UltraEdit) I 1st have to paste/copy it into word to get the line endings wright... [Frown]

for fernando and for all those ppl using office tools other than m$ office.
you can always use either of the ways:
1) copy the code from the page and place it in to wordpad (startable by typing "write" in the run box)
2) use bbCodeparser (foundable at www.gwspikval.com/jooel/scripts ) to get all the codes from one topic-

cheers-

Delayed for a couple of weeks by vacation... [Cool]
I have a "very limited" (i.e. high level) solution that meets the requirements of my current ennvironment. I will post CPUNAME() in the UDF forum shortly.
Cheers...

Thanks for the UDF Waltz...

Hopefully someone can get it working properly for Windows 9x as well using WMI and reporting speed as well as Name.

NTDOC...

Thanks for the feedback.

I was using a WMI query originally,
code:
$cpuname=WMIQuery("Name","Win32_Processor","$machine")

but encountered a ton of machines with outdated cimwin32.dll, resulting in "Unknown Intel P6 processor" results. See MS Knowledge Base Article Q289514 for MS fixes for Win9x, NT4, and Win2K.

At one stage, I had thought of doing a WMI query with a sub to the regread if the WMI result was wonky, but elected to go with a kiss solution.

As for the Processor Speed thingie, I consider it to be outside the scope of the Processor Name issue. I have a seperate WMI query to take care of that.
code:
$clockspeed=WMIQuery("CurrentClockSpeed","Win32_Processor","$machine")

Cheers...
