Having gone though this just recently while installing and setting up Kixtart, Here is what I found for WIN95 and WIN98 machines1)%0\..\Kix32.exe %0\..\john.kix is correct.
%0\..\Kix32.exe john.kix rarely worked on my machines.
2) KX32, KX16 and KX95.dll needs to be in the windows system folder.
3) Make sure MSVCRT.DLL is present in c:\windows\system
4)Don't forget the KIXtart.INI file in netlogon for the KIXRPC mappings If possible write the SET KIXRPC statement to autoexec.bat or in the beginning of the login batch file (if its in the login batch file use WINSET). You can also write it to the registry.
5) use the EXIT command at the end of your file.
6) I ound that lmscript emulation also helps it run more reliable and faster on WIN9x stations
