KiXtart, is it all that Im after or an Overkill for what I need?

Currently playing with a NT4.0 site running exchange 5.5, SQL 7.0, IIS. 98% of clients are running NT, the rest 9x, in the near future clients will be purchased with XP (operating sys and Office) and Im worring about the changes that yet another client and office version will bring.

We currently use basic batch files to map n/w drives, and more importantly to set-up the users profile to access e-mail using Outlook 97. Obviously looking at profile directory structure our existing script isnt going to cut-it but also I have heard that XP doesnt like batch files... Im assuming I need to look into alternative ways, hence Im here trying to find out if KiXtart is the answer to my prayers.

Dear,

Welcome to the board.

There are two ways of doing it by scripts. Using Visual Basic or Kixtart. The latest
Kixtart can do hardly anything.

We advice you first to read some interesting stuff on FAQ forum:

Kixtart Starter's Guide
Running Batch files From Kix
Installing an Application as an Admin

Also there are interesting sites. One of them is ours

http://home.wanadoo.nl/scripting

The "links" page points to the other interesting kixtart site. Also the members have create
a great amount of interesting kixtart functions which you can use in your scripts or you can
for ideas.
Summaries of them are

UDF's on kixtart.org site
UDF's on www.scriptlogic.com site
FAQ's on kixtart.org site

greetings.

Hello TechNic and welcome to the board.

XP uses batch files just fine. XP automatically expands the %0 variable which makes it operate different then what some expect.

A Logon Script Does Not Work If %0 or %0\..\ Calls Multiple Commands (Q318689)

Once you get started using KiXtart, you will soon wonder how you ever did without it. I have written many, many batch files over the years (and I still do for small tasks), but the power of KiXtart and the things you can do both locally and remotely are amazing.

Batch files are not dead in XP, but KiXtart is MUCH better then batch alone.

I just picked up kixtart a week or two back, and am in the process of implementing my first kixtart script into production at this moment.

It seems like a much improved form of batch scripting, and there are some really handy editors and other accessories available for download as well.

For Note: I believe Batch Scripting is still fine in XP also. We tried a few XP workstations here, however we did not like it in the least. We've decided to stay all 2000 for now.

I believe in the near future everything will have to be VB due to .net, or at least that is the plan as I understand it

Thanks to all for your responses, I have decided to set aside some time to delve into Kixtart (although I am concerned with Jhalks gloomy prediction re .net).

Appologies to MCA for my less than helpful subject description.

Cheers

Dear,

You are always welcome. Your subject description is more clear than most of them. F.e. "I have a
question" doesn't explain what that person is meaning.
Simple based on this board member experiences we complete descriptions to get a faster response
for your question by members with best knowledge. So this board has introduce the COM forum for
questions about that kind of stuff.
greetings.
