I am not sure the best way to tackle my problem here. I am very new to Kix so my knowledge is still somewhat limited.

We have a set of users that have their regular workstation with Windows 7 and a VDI machine running Windows XP. We want them to run the standard login script from their workstation and run a separate one from the VDI machine.

All of the VDI machines are on 1 particular subnet.
All of the VDI machines are running Windows XP.
All of the VDI machines system names start with vdi.

Currently our scripts are super basic. They look like this:
 Code:
IF INGROUP("GROUPNAME")
    do stuff
EndIf

IF INGROUP("GROUPNAME2")
    do stuff
EndIf

Should I sort the new script by subnet, OS version or system name? I suspect that I will need to exclude the VDI machines from our current script as well? What is the preferred method for that? What I was able to find for running scripts based in IP it looked rather complex.

I was thinking OS version would be easiest, but the problem with that is we have a few users that have not had their systems replaced yet with Windows 7, they should all be done in the next couple of weeks.

Ideally, the new script to do something like this:
 Code:
IF INGROUP("GROUPNAME")
 do this
IF INGROUP("GROUPNAME") AND Left(@wksta, 3) = "vdi"
 do this stuff

How do I tell the IF INGROUP("GROUPNAME") statement to run if the @wksta is anything other than VDI? Is that a poor way to solve my problem?

Welcome to KORG!

Our login script supports "ComputerOUs(OUName...)" with mandatory controls. By placing the VDI computers in a specific OU, you could control resource processing for VDI servers with ComputerOUs=!Workstations,VDIwkstns and for regular workstations with ComputerOUs=Workstations,!VDIwkstns.

The leading "!" means NOT members of that OU. Unlike our user group memberships, which can require membership in multiple groups, only one OU match is possible. Thus, you can map one set of resources for all systems, one set for regular workstations, and one for VDI workstations.

The script also can process resource authorization by subnet membership. In this method, you could use a lookup table to map a different resource based on the subnet with a single resource definition.

You can download the user manual and get more information on this web page. The script is free for small organizations (1-4 domain controllers). Reviewing the manual might provide some ideas for your own script, too.

There is also a UDF called ComputerInGroup() - the latest version is on my web site's UDF library. You can create a group for the VDI hosts and use this UDF to decide to process resources for VDI and non-VDI computers based on that group membership.
