First off I am sorry if this is in the wrong place but it has been a while since i have used kix.

Here is my delema I work in a school as the tech. we have removed all our wireless pcs from the domain and we have found that this is a great improvement to performance. The only little glitch to my plan is mapping the user drives when they log in. this is not a problem if the are just browsing the internet but when they are doing some graphical work i need it to run a short-cut a login box pop up and they login to is and it will map there drives. I am not asking anyone to do this but rather than spedingn days working on it to find out it cant be done does anyone think this may be possible.

Hi and Welcome to the board.

There is no easy way (if possible at all) to start a script when a user tries to access a certain drive or printer that is not there yet as far as I know.
We have something set up for our VPN users but is does require a manual action from the user.
They can login from any location outside our offices and browse the internet and access their e-mail and stuff but as soon as they need a network drive or printer they runs a shortcut from their desktop that starts the logon script and maps drives and printers. Creating a shortcut is easy. Check out the WSHShortcut UDF in the UDF section. We link it to a cmd file that starts the script. A dynamic check is done to see if the VPN client is installed and if it is it checks if a site is configured. When all checks are positive a shortcut is created otherwise the shortcut is deleted if it exists.

I wonder what are these improvements you get from removing the devices from domain. Bad wireless cards or poor coverage or insufficient bandwidth will cause issues. But machine joined to domain in itself should not be an issue.

School: no budget, many devices, use of inexpensive (home-grade) equipment like Linksys, NetGear, repeaters rather than a meshed WDS network. Take your pick - removing AD removes the chatter associated with AD, which will improve wireless performance. Remember - all wireless devices on a single AP are sharing a single radio and core switch port!

So the issue is not ad but deficient wireless? If so,"this is a temporary relief fix...
