I live in a legal environment -- an environment where cost-recovery for things like copies, FAXing and printing is important. For this, we use a program call LaserTrak (sometimes referred to as CopiTrak). The vendor's website is copitrak dotcom.

I have recently stumbled upon a compatibility issue with Kixtart 4.62 and LaserTrak, where calling some Kixtart functions/commands while LaserTrak is running (e.g., MESSAGEBOX), causes wkix32.exe to crash. The Event Log from a crash is below ... looking for any suggestions on how to work around this. We have already discussed shutting down LaserTrak while the Logon Script is running, but that idea got shut down by people with doors and higher pay grades. Hoping the smart people in this Forum can offer some additional advice.

TIA!

are you doing something to the files in this folder: C:\LT2005\

the crash is caused by the DLL: WIN32HK_2005.DLL

kixtart by itself is not trying to use it. but if you are trying to do something to it, it may be the cause of the crash.
I'm thinking this software of yours hooks to all processes in a manner similar to an debugger, av utility or hacker's sniffer.
if there is a way to exclude some software from the tyranny of the software, that would obviously be the answer.
does their support provide any insight why their software behaves like this or how to fix it?

No, I am not doing anything with the file.

If LaserTrak is running and I run a simple script like ...

$x = messagebox ("Test","Test",64)

The messsagebox never appears, I hear a "ding", wkix32.exe shuts down and the crash is logged in the Event Log.

If I shutdown LaserTrak and run the script again, everything works as expected.

The vendor, CopiTrak, has been contacted, but they are saying the problem is with Kix ...

The software is designed to intercept print operations for cost-recovery purposes. This all happens in the background; no user interaction required.

Have you tried using kix32.exe instead? Or an older version of kix to see if it happens then?

I just did a google search on WIN32HK_2005.DLL... the 2nd link describes almost the exact same problem with Office, and may have been fixed by deleting and reinstalling the dll.

clearly their software and their dll hook cause the crash.
it is the only software that causes this behavior so obviously it is the one to blame until PROVEN otherwise.

I would tend to agree ... just trying to cover all my bases.

Our Programmers reported a similar issue when installing Visual Studio 2010. The installer quits, without notice or warning, when LaserTrak is running. If I shutdown LaserTrak, the installer runs (although eventually gets blocked by McAfee HIPS ... but those worms are better left in the can).

@Allen -- Yes, I did try kix32.exe. No joy ...

Just to close the loop on this topic, the solution (eventually provided by CopiTrak), was actually pretty simple. In the LaserTrak program directory, there is an INI file (WIN32HK_2005.INI) containing a [Non-User Applications] section. We added the following entry under this section:

WKIX32.EXE=Y

Problem solved!

So, in the end, this wasn't a Kixtart issue, but hopefully the 411 will help someone else out there.

nice to see that the programmers did a smart enough logic to exclude essential processes.

kinda still wondering why their dll crashes with the login script. it's like it tries to call functions that are not available in that context or something...
