Once and for all - IF INGROUP on 9X?

Is it possible to successfully utilize the INGROUP command to identify group memberships on Win 9X clients, WITHOUT having to run KIXRPC?
I have seen conflicting posts about this.

Thanks for the info, however I can't make it work. AARGH!
Here is a copy of the basic test script I am trying to get to work:
IF INGROUP ("AGH Kronos users")
USE K: /DELETE /PERSISTENT
USE K: "\\shs-agh\kronos" /PERSISTENT
ELSE
USE T: /DELETE /PERSISTENT
USE T: "\\TECH2K\PUBLIC" /PERSISTENT
ENDIF
On 9X devices it always fails over to the Else mappings. The group I am checking against is a Global group in the login domain. I have verified all Case sensitivity with the group name as well. Any ideas?

Nothing is preventing the installation of RPC other than the desire to simplify the environment as much as possible.
The fewer services we run on the DCs along with fewer files on the clients the better.
If RPC HAS to be installed, so be it. However I would prefer not to.

According to email from Ruud the Win9x should be able to decern GLOBAL groups without KXRPC.
Chris,
When you say logon Domain, all NT/2000 systems appear to work okay with this INGROUP call?
How about making a different test case.
Make a GLOBAL group named TESTING
and add the account you want to try into this group. Then logon to this Windows 9x system and rename all of the *.PWL file in %windir% to *.PW_ and verify that system is logged onto the network.
Don't even try mapping for now. Create a test script called MYTEST.KIX and copy it to this Windows 9x system locally along with the KIX32.EXE and KIX .DLL files, all in the same C:\TESTING folder.
Then at a DOS prompt:
c:\testing> KIX32.EXE MYTEST.KIX /F
code:
IF INGROUP("TESTING")
? "User was found"
ELSE
? "User not found"
ENDIF
? @ERROR
Let us know what happens here.

I tried what you suggested step by step and the script returns:
User not found
0
Any other ideas?

I made it work! I did not wait long enough for the group membership to update on the BDCs before testing the script. I think I am in the clear now.
Thank you all for your help. Can anyone give me examples of things I will not be able to do without KxRPC?

If you don't want to install KXRPC on all the DCs (because of too many DCs or no permissions to do it), you can always install the KXRPC on two different servers (eg: fileservers) and specify a kixtart.ini file in the netlogon specifying were to use the KXRPC services.
Hope this can help someone.
