Did anyone ever notice the following behavior on Windows 7?

  • Two local printers are installed (PDF printer and Snagit printer). No network printers are installed.
  • When adding a network printer it is automatically set as default (dialog to choose if you want this does not show).
  • When adding a second network printer there is an option to choose if you want this printer as default.

This is interfering with our printer script because it sets the wrong printer as default (automatically, the script does NOT do this). When all printers are there and the script runs for the second time the correct printer gets set as default.

A workaround might be adding all printers and after adding all needed printers select what printer should be default and set it but my guess is that there must also be a way to prevent Windows 7 from deciding what printer should be default. Anyone know how to do this? I’ve been googling but no luck yet.

Ehm, isn't that common practice?
First add all printers and then using SetDefaultPrinter ?

Actually it isn't the first 'network' printer you add, but the first real printer you add.

I guess it depends on what you are used to.
In the past I always added one printer, check if it should be default, add the next printer, check if it should be default, etc.....

Got it working now by first adding all needed printers and checking and setting the default printer when everything is added.

Never had any issues with this in NT4, 2K and XP. Seven was giving me a headache on this but I took some aspirin and all is fine now.
I guess I learned something today \:\)

I never did it any different, thats why I never came across this problem. Only problem I had with Windows 7 getting mapped printers from a 2003 server was that Windows 7 kept asking if it should allow the driver. But you, lessons learned \:\)

Is there a way to prevent windows 7 from asking if it is allowed to install the print driver?

Afaik not, However if you use the RSAT tools in Windows 7 with a Domain Admin account you can set up the Group Policy Preferences and deploy printers through there, and basically setup up most of what you have in your login script.
