Here's the code I use to register KixGUI. I have included and install for the VB5 runtime just in case my Win 9x users don't have it installed yet:

code:
$root=createobject("KiXGUI.Desktop")
if len($root)=0
if @inwin = "1"
shell "%COMSPEC% /c Regsvr32 /s %WINDIR%\KiXGUI.dll"
else
shell "%COMSPEC% /c %WINDIR%\System\Regsvr32 /s %WINDIR%\KiXGUI.dll"
endif

$root=createobject("KixGUI.Desktop")
if len($root)=0
$GUI=ReadValue("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Relizon","GUI")
if $GUI<>0
$Selection=MessageBox("This logon script supports a graphical user interface, however you do not have the needed files."+@CRLF+@CRLF+"Click YES to install the files, NO to choose to NEVER run the files, CANCEL to install the files later.","Relizon Logon Script",3,30)
SetConsole("Show")
cls ?
if $Selection = 6
$msvbvm50=@SCRIPTDIR+"\msvbvm50.exe"
? "Installing the needed files...please wait"
shell "$msvbvm50 /s"
?? "Files installed...thank you" ?
?? "Graphical Logon will be seen during your next logon." ?
sleep 2
endif
if $Selection = 7
if KEYEXIST("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Relizon")=0
ADDKEY("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Relizon")
endif
WriteValue("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Relizon","GUI","0","REG_SZ")
endif
endif
endif
endif

I should note that the rest of my logon script supports both KixGUI mode and console mode, but the above method should work for registering and installing the needed files. Also, Kix exe's, dll's (including KixGUI) files are copied to the client during the "logon.bat."

What are the machine specifics? I think I got this error when I tried registering the KixGUI.dll on a Win 9x machine that did NOT have the VB5 runtime files installed. I could be mistaken, but it was a message very similar to this.

Don't believe the documentation that says that only Office 97 is required because that isn't necessarily true. I found that in some instances the Office 97 didn't install the VB5 runtimes.

I works on one but not another.

I just checked on a Win 95 machine without the VB5 runtime installed and got the following message:

quote:
RegSvr32
LoadLibrary("C:Windows\kixgui.dll") failed. GetLastError returns 0x00000485

I'd say try installing the VB5 Runtime and see what you get.

Ok Chris,
Could you tell me how to install the VB runtime files and where to get them from...

This link is from the KiXGUI documentation:

quote:
Visual Basic Run-time files (from Microsoft) :
v5 : http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb50pro/utility/1/win98/EN-US/Msvbvm50.exe
v6 : http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/install/6/Win98Me/EN-US/VBRun60.exe

You can install the files manually or use the script I posted above. I put the VB5 runtime on the PDC as it is the smaller of the two choices. The number of machines that DO NOT have the VB5 runtime should be small, but you may want to check and see if executing a 1.2MB file from your logon server would create bandwidth issues.

Thats strange im getting the same error when I type a bogus dll name in like kg.dll after regsvr32, so typing in from prompt 'regsvr32 kg.dll" returns the same error code as before...

This is from Microsoft's Explanation of Regsvr32 Usage and Error Messages (Q249873), which can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q249873

quote:
LoadLibrary(" Dllname ") failed. GetlastError returns 0x00000485

From Winerror.h, 0x00000485 = 1157 (ERROR_DLL_NOT_FOUND), which means "One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found." For example, typing regsvr32 missing.dll returns this error message if the Missing.dll file is not found.

I'm not sure what dll is missing. Try the VB5 runtime and see if that makes a difference.

Guys,
Try this one instead, it may works :
CD "%windir%"
If @error=0
shell "%COMSPEC% /c Regsvr32 /s KiXGUI.dll"
endif

I got some strange things with regsvr32 on 9x system without the complete path.

Steve, can you be a little more explicit about your last post ?

Ignore my last post the ramblings of a mad man. Ive got the clients updating, funny the VB5 runtime files work but not VB6.
